What's up ESB, This week I recieved both the Rival RB2 and the Fairtex BGV1 14oz gloves, and I just wanted to let you know what I thought of each. I'm also including a video for you to see the craftsmanship for yourself. Rival RB2 I was surprised by the quality of the leather as I found it to be a little thin. The stitching is good, and so is the wraparound wristband. Although the hand compartment seems to be a bit large for me, I find that the fingertip area seems to be a bit tight (and my hands are not particularly large), and this results in my fingertips touching the wall of gloves. The padding is sufficient and the glove perfoms well overall. The size of the glove is much larger than the Fairtex BGV1s and you can see the side by side comparison at the end of the second vid. Fairtex BGV1 These gloves are handmade in Thailand and quality of these joints are light years ahead of the RB2s. The leather is nice and thick and the stitching is excellent. You might not be able to see from the vid, but the lining of the wristband is also leather and the glove has a nice compact fit on my hand. There is adequate space at the fingertips where there is also some nice padding. Overall the gloves perform amazingly and right now it's hard for me to fathom another pair of gloves with better craftsmanship. Fairtex is of the highest quality, no surprise there. I just don't understand the point of 14 ounce gloves. You should spar in 16s and hit bags and pads with 12s. What do you do with 14s?
^I wasn't getting enough protection on my 12oz Evertrash gloves (first pair that I bought), and others have suggested getting a 14oz pair so it made sense. To be honest, I'm glad I went with the 14s because it still feels light enough for me and the glove is much smaller than the 12oz Everlasts.
I was gonna go with 16s but most people said that for my weight (150lbs), it wouldn't be necessary. Plus I tried on a pair of 16oz Fairtex's and they were gigantic on my hands.
I hit bags and pads with 12 ounce Grant Pro Bag Gloves. I spar with 16 ounce Winnings. I dunno, it's the way I have always done it.
You know, I don't know why it took me so long but, I just realized that you cannot really compare these two gloves together because they are two different types of gloves. The Rivals are straight bag gloves while, the Fairtex are actually geared more towards sparring.
I've been using an MMA type glove for bag work for years, but recently I started working with a coach and the workouts got MUCH harder. Now I find the MMA style gloves killing my hands after 15 rnds on the bags and mitts. I have a pair of Everlast 16's I'm planning to use until I find something better, but they are not comfortable.
Fairtex advertises these as "perfect for bag and pad work" and list different gloves for sparring. If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me.
