Lewis was staggered more than once in that fight and Vitali broke Lewis' nose. Lewis retired because of that fight...............even Max, who was sitting right behind Lewis' corner said that Lewis was finished, out of gas. Vitali would have knocked Lewis out in the next round. Lewis has been running from Vitali ever since.........Angelo Dundee said that Vitali was cheated out of the WBC title that night.........
Vitali would have won no doubt about that. He was outboxing Lewis and winning the rounds consistently.
It would not have gone 12 rounds. The fight was being fought at a brutal pace and was very physical both men seemed tired after the 6th, Lewis more so. Personally had the fight continued I think Lewis would have stopped Vitali in the 7th or 8th round. He was hurting Vitali, making him hold on for dear life at the end of the 6th. Klittards love to point out Vitali hurt Lewis more than once but conveniently forget Lewis had Vitali hurt and holding on more than once himself. Infact the way Vitali had a vice like grip around Lewis waist at the end of the 6th with Lewis trying to back off suggests Vitali was badly hurt, you don't hang on for dear life like that unless you're in trouble. Lewis had swung the fight his way. He was walking down Vitali, hurting him inside and Vitali's punches no longer seemed to have the same effect as early on in the fight. Had Vitali somehow survived though and made in beyond the 8th round I think he would have stopped an exhausted Lewis.
Vitali was getting hit with the cleaner and heavier shots. Lewis had the measure of him and Vitali wasn't hurting him anymore - listen to George Foreman say Lewis doesn't respect Vitali's power in that final round - and Vitali was stumbling around the ring and clinging on desperately to Lewis to try to prevent him having the room to throw anything clean. Vitali didn't have much more to give, he'd come out of the blocks quick, he'd been working twice as hard at least as Lewis had and was running out of steam. This, coupled with Lewis hitting him with more regularity and getting the power shots in, was wearing him down quickly. As Vitali sat in his corner after the 6th he was taking big gulps of air. Vitali was in no better shape than Lewis by that time. With that bad cut there was no way in hell that Vitali was reaching the final bell, if he wasn't cut then the fight still wouldn't have gone the distance and someone was going to get stopped. The fact that Lewis wasn't being hurt by Vitali's punches anymore in the 6th and that Vitali was reduced to clinching to avoid getting hit would give me more faith that Lewis would get the KO win than Vitali.
how would it go on to the later rounds? Vitalis defence was too porous to survive Lewis punches for more than 6 rounds. You simply have to accept that Vitali wasn't good enough to last longer, or he would have.
