HBO i guess finally has all the numbers actually accounted for and they say the actuall buys and earnings are even bigger. Does anyone see a fight to come close to these numbers ever again? http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3079329
realistically...not for a long long time. You had the largest non-heavyweight draw in history against the sports pound-for-pound best, promoted by the sports largest non-heavyweight draw. What sold the PPV's was 24/7 and Pretty Boy Floyd's antics and press conferences...interviews (including SuperBowl interview)...Floyd may not be better than SRR; but he sold that fight better than Tyson could sell a fight...he talked the ****, build the fight up...James Toney has yet to play a bad guy role better, and until a more mainstream good-guy (Oscar) and until a narcissistic bad-gay (Floyd) come together with so many accomplishments in the sport and a world title on the line...i don't see it happening. But god bless them, those 6 months were the most exciting in my lifetime whether the fight lived up to everyones expectations or not, as a boxing fan it was a tactical battle i enjoyed watching and the hype and exposure made it worth it and sold the fight.
