"Tyson was unbeaten until 1996 when Holyfield ko'd him."

    ???????????????????

    What about Buster?

Tyson was ko'd in his prime or the word prime is useless in dealing with boxers.

There are certain fighters that can NEVER be KOD in a 4 round bout. Meehan was an early and bigger edition of a Sammy Angott who would be in your face, clutching and clawing for the 4 rounds and were it a 15 round bout he would still be ahead probably. Yes Dempsey was a fast starter but
He was not at his peak yet fighting just 3 years.
It might also enlighten you to know that little fat Meehan who decisioned Dempsey in 4 rounds did this Mr Suzie :
Meehan beat Jack Dillon 6rds, 1917
Meehan drew with Billy Miske,4 rds, 1918
Meehan BEAT Sam Langford 4 rds, 1919
So Suzie, either the other two guys were ALSO STIFFS, or Willie Meehan was a great FOUR ROUND SPOILER...
You can't have it both ways sir:...
P.S. In their last bout Dempsey had Willie Meehan on the deck. Plus no Louis, Foreman, Liston, Tyson, Ali, Frazier kod everyone of their oppnents in under 4 rounds, or were ahead after the 4th round, so find a better way Suzie to demean Jack Dempsey. He has NEVER did you any harm, except he once existed...:-(

Sorry Edward, in my haste to respond to a Dempsey hater, I of course onerlooked the 24 year old Tyson first being kod by Buster Douglas .
And of course then by Evander Holyfield. Gratia !

Meehan brings up why I disagree with you, Burt. I agree that four-round fights should be ignored for the most part. They are not good tests.

    But

"There are certain fighters who can never be ko'd in a 4 round bout."

But why is Meehan one of them, while Marciano is not? Rocky was never ko'd, only down twice in his career for short counts. Meehan was stopped six times, twice in the first round.

Years ago I read a ringside account of the 1918 Meehan fight, and it said to me that Meehan swarmed Dempsey, throwing a lot of punches. Being only 5' 9" his shortness somewhat negated Dempsey's bob and weave style.

So I think styles might in fact favor Marciano. Meehan could be viewed as a Marciano type in style, except he was fat where Rocky was muscular and a slapper where Rocky was a puncher.

An excersize in futility to speculate Edward, but Meehan was on you all the time, hardly open to missed punches ,whilst Marciano was a helluva lot harder puncher, would be much more open after lobbing those wild grenades. Remember E,Marciano kod Joe Walcott,Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, whilst a much inferior Ted Lowry, survived Rocky's blasts for TWENTY ROUNDS in 2 close bouts. I hate to be redundant, but it all comes down to styles...Meehan was a specialized spoiler almost impossible to hurt because he never committed himself, and giving no punching room for a Dempsey, a Miske, a Sam langford to beat Meehan in short fights. THIS IS WHY WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WILLIE MEEHAN TODAY...And Dempsey was
not in his prime about then. So because Meehan was inferior to Marciano
H2H,his crab-like ,take no chance style, made him less vulnerable to a
Dempsey KO ,than the wilder swinging ,but much better Marciano...Styles..

Do I have to repeat myself. ? Whover Dempsey fought at his best with Jack Kearns ,he beat. Yes Ali, was champion when the contenders were superior to other era's I agree, but No fighter picks his date of birth. NONE.
A hypothetical question to you K, it won't hurt. What would you say on this ESB today, if Ali was born in 1895, and fought the same opponents that Dempsey did with similar results ? Would U now be posting me with the spurious question,Which HOF or close, fighters did Ali beat Burt " ? Think this question over carefully K . Would who Ali fought in 1918-23, truly detract from what his TRUE abilities were today.Of course NOT. He would still have latent skills unique to himself today, regardless of who he fought
were to he have fought the same fighters Dempsey did...NO DOUBT...
Any thoughtful and unbiased poster would think so. Dempsey beat everyone of his opponents of his reign. HE OR ALI COULD DO NO MORE..
And oh yes sir: Tommy Gibbons was a HOF fighter, and truly great. Billy Miske was a top-notch fighter in his prime. Gunboat Smith was a great right hand puncher. Battling Levinsky is considered one of the best fighters of his era. Dempsey too, kod him. So yes Dempsey happened to ko HOFamers, but as I said before instead of the name Dempsey, it was Ali
who beat these guys, would you still pose the question, who did he beat?
    Hmmm....
P.S. The greatest fighter of all-time could have reigned over a less talented group, than a guy who he could have whipped, who fought in a tougher era.
And so with possibly Dempsey, I'm convinced...:hi:
