First off,I have no arguement re.Sugar Ray's pound for pound status. However, too much credence, imo,is given to his multiple late career title wins. I figure him to have been at his best during 1947-1952. That version of Sugar ray,for me,is the guy who is the all time best. When he was winning and losing the middleweight title in the mid/late fifties,he wasw getting beaten by people who would not be on an all time great list. No disrespect to people such as Gene Fullmer and Carmen Basilio. His welterweight wins over the likes of Tommy Bell and Kid Gavilan were sublime, the same with his earlier middleweight victories over La motta and the return with Randy Turpin. It's a shame about the heat overwhelming him in the Joey Maxim fight. If Robinson had retired in 1952,his legacy would have been assured. He did n't need those past prime fights. I liken it to Muhammad Ali's legacy having been assured after 1975. He did n't need to become a three time heavyweight champ to cement his achievements.

I see the 'no disrespect' but are you seriously saying you don't feel Fullmer and Basilio are ATG's.

Maybe that's why you haven't got a lot of replies. Because you talk a lot of **** :good

Hello there Flea. I do n't have a lot of replies,eh ? Take a good look around this site,my friend. No I do n't consider Fullmer and Basilio all time great middleweights, when compared with the likes of Robinson,Carlos Monzon,Marvin Hagler and Roy Jones. Everybody has different views and perspectives, which is the beauty of debate.

The fact he was competing in MW title fights at the age of 39 says allot for him and adds to his legacy allot. Remember Hagler was retired at 32 and Monzon at 35, so they didnt even try to stay at the top level for as long

No Fullmer and Basillo arent the best MWs the world has ever seen, but they were some of the best of their time and Fullmer is up there with the likes of Lamotta. He would have won comfortably in his prime though

Fullmer and Basilio are no ATG's. Tommy Bell, on the other hand...

There obviously not the top tier MWs but they only come along once every so often. Carlos Monzon or Hagler never fought anyone of that caliber either.

Fullmer is a 2nd rate Middleweight and was a solid champion.

Basilio is debatably a top 10 Welterweight and was again a good middleweight.

There not ATGs but there darn good

The mid fifties. The time period

What? Hearns and Leonard? Even the version of Duran he fought was at that level.

I mean he never fought a truley great Middleweight on par with himself, but who ever did.

Duran, Hearns and Leonard were moving up in weight but were great fighters.

    I was being ironical.:good

Basilio is definitely an ATG, and Fullmer could be argued as a great MW.

I figured it was pretty obvious when I so easily dismissed them and actually considered Tommy Bell, as the threadstarter had done.
