    Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Orlando Salido, on September 18th 2004 for the WBA/IBF featherweight titles.

    This tactical war with his fellow Mexican was actually better than either of the fights Salido would have years later with that Puerto Rican kid who'd eventually borrow the JuanMa nickname. A violent chess match for the purist. High level of both offensive and defensive skill, some nice exchanges, momentum shifts... Yet this memorable bout seems to be strangely forgotten when discussing the careers of either participant.

    Salido has always been underrated, he is a great fighter, strong-willed, with a good chin and good pop. As of today, he remains Gamboa's best win by a mile.

    I'm guessing HBO and the viewers expected an a action packed fight, based on the recent fight with Pacquiao. Of course what turned out to be a tactical fight led too JMM flying out to Indonesia, getting paid $32,000 and losing controversially to Chris John. After this he switched up his style to a more fan friendly one. This is a pivotal part of JMM's career for me. What did you make of his fight with Chris John IntentionalButt?

    To be fair it was close but the scorecards made the robbery look a lot worse. I think JMM edged it but it was close although I haven't scored it in a while. You could also question the Noorwood decision and all 3 fights against Pac. Trying not to sound like a ***** here, but the Mayweather fight was his only clear loss and you could easily argue it should be his only one.

    One of those fights you forget about until somebody brings it up.

    I haven't watched it in ages, but will later tonight. From what I remember, the fight featured both skill and a decent level of action.

    :good Agreed, and one of Dinamita's best as well.

    Inversely, the fact that Salido performed as well against a five-star talent like JMM as anyone over the past decade not named Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao or Chris John speaks very highly of Salido as well and enhances his resume as he enhances Marquez's. The fight is really a credit to both, and shows off some of each boxer's prize attributes in stark relief against competition as credible as you'll find. Mutually flattering...yet you almost never hear it mentioned when either of them is discussed. :?

    I'd add that Salido is an above average technician to go along with his will, chin, and pop.

    Not the equal of a Juan Manuel Marquez, obviously - hence the competitive but clear loss...but he knows how to box. If he didn't, prime Marquez would have made him look absolutely foolish.

    I reckon some casual fans believe Marquez fought Barrera next after the first fight with Pacquaio.:patsch
    But when you think of some of the guys he beat before Pac 1,he was tearing through some quality featherweights.Salido has always gone criminally under the radar.Medina and Gainer were no slouches,and Marquez dispatched them quite comfortably,so Salido's performance stands up to any scrutiny.Even after Barrera,the way it looked to me,JMM only started getting real credit after the second Pacquaio fight.
    People are only taking Salido seriously now(outside hardcore fight fans)

    If HBO is turned off by the likes of Marquez vs. Salido, they truly DKSAB...or about boxing fans, who they like to think of as idiots. :-(

    As for the John decision...it's honestly never bothered me that much. :conf Far less than any in the Pacquiao trilogy, tbh.

    Truly a "close enough to swing either way" affair and I think on a few viewings years apart I've actually split it for one and the other. Each by a **** hair. One of the reasons my opinion of John is so high and I'm more willing than some to cut him some slack on overall level of opposition or willingness to leave SE Asia.
