OK...so some time has passed since this was the preeminent conjectural match-up at 168 pounds.

Bute has improved (and come into his athletic prime).

Kessler has declined (and exited his).

As of today...even if Kessler comes back with a vicious KO win over Froch...I am sucking it up and admitting that Bute should be the slight favorite should they meet after the tournament.

Bute would knock Kessler out. Bute would knock Ward out, but Ward will not fight him.

Bute would not knock anyone at the higher level out. I like Bute and I have said he was extremely talented for many years.

However, he will not KO Kessler. No way. Kessler is levels above Andrade, Miranda, Zuniga etc.

    So who will win?

Well, I think the Bute team themselves were right all along: They openly said one year ago that Bute would beat everyone except Kessler. However, they reckoned that their fighter's level was getting closer to Kessler's level.

I completely agree with that assessment from Bute and his trainer.

Today, I think the fight would be square even, and it is understandable if some people even think Bute would win. Personally, I think it is deadeven, but if I HAD to pick, it would be Bute. Bute that could change after the Froch fight depends what Kessler turns up (whether he is still partying too much in places like Monaco, Thailand etc. or if he has gotten his **** together again).

I used to favor Kessler by points (narrow decision though). Given that Bute has developed his abilities and Kessler seem to have slipped I think Bute takes this on points.

I do hope that Kessler shows up as a changed man on saturday though.

Bute takes this on points now, a couple of years ago Kessler would have won a UD.

Style make fights......................bla bla .................but ?

Before the Pavlik vs. Martinez fight i stated this :

Kessler vs. Ward = Pavlik vs. Hopkins
Kessler vs. Calzaghe = Pavlik vs. Martinez.......??

I think Kessler will performe like :

Kessler vs. Andrade = Kessler vs. Froch

And i could see Bute performe like

Bute vs. Andrade 1 or 2 = Bute vs. Froch....................??

I used to think Kessler would win. Either by a decisive points wide or even stoppage. But now, Bute is looking real sharp, fast and powerful. Bute wins a 12 round decision.

my pick would be "2-3 years ago I thought Bute would win on points, and now i think he would know Kesller out. " but you don`t have that option.

2-3 years ago I thought Kessler would knock Bute out... but I also insisted that Bute would get better and that one day, who knows, Bute might be able to make it very competitive....

...now I think we shouldn't count Kessler out just because Ward beat him and just because he has declined.

Let's see how he does against Froch before deciding how far off his peak Kessler is these days.

Interesting that the poll so far (41 respondents) reflects nobody changing their mind from Bute to Kessler in that span of time.

Remember, Mikkel didn't look spectacular against Perdomo (although this can and has been attributed to rust), so his decline isn't an isolated instance of losing to Ward.

Meanwhile, in that same time, Bute has recovered from an image-tarnishing affair in the 1st Andrade fight (nearly getting KTFO...and saved by the bell/bad reffing in the eyes of many) and come through unscathed...making, not losing, believers.

It would depend heavily on the venue but, outside of Germany, Bute would be given benefit of the doubt on close rounds now. Two to three years ago, it would have been an uphill battle: Bute winning a round only if Kessler had clearly lost it.

Bute is by some the new #1 at 168 after fighting Andrade twice and Miranda ones. They of cause could be right...............When the best fights the best, one lose. Kessler, Taylor, Pavlik, Abraham and hopefully Froch is next...........and if Bute fights Kessler, Ward, Dirrell, Abraham and specially Froch, Bute could lose to.............

Before the Froch fight: Bute - Kessler 60-40
Afther the Froch fight: Bute - Kessler 40-60 (i hope;))
