Revisiting: Paul Williams vs. Antonio Margorito

Tony Margarito started to laugh in those last 30 seconds of the fifth when he landed his first meaningful punch - don't quite remember if it was a right uppercut or a str8 right - but he was very stubborn accepting obvious defeat since his own trainer said that he needed to wake up in the 6th so they must have known they were far behind on points... Larry Merchant gave the fifth to Margo and Lederman all six rounds to PW and since there's no dispute that PW won the 9th ( looking at some eye catching shots that snapped Tony's head in HBO's slow motion at the end of the 9th), Tony could never have won if he didn't knock him out - it's Bernard Hopkins vs Jermain Taylor I logic all over again. PW has tremendous combination of reach, speed, punch output, stamina and accuracy but he doesn't have a big punch - what surprised me the most really was that PW's thin frame was able to take those meaty body shots and Tony really fixes his sight on the waistline from the get go...

 

I had it 8-4 watching it live with commentary

I watched it a second time without commentary.. 8-4 again..

 

I'll said it's fair 8-4

 

it seemed like it wasnt close b/c of how williams swept the early rounds.

He was exceptionally slow early but he still blocked and tried to punch in between but that is hard to do when your opponent throws 124 punches - you have your hands full of blocking punches and still take a right to the body or short right hook in the end of the combination, Margo increased from throwing 60 by the 5th to 80 by the 6th... The Tijuana Tornado tried to take the South Carolina Punisher out alright but would never be able to stop him with a barrage like against Andrew "Six Heads" Lewis on the ropes cuz he could never put more than 3 punches together. I guess that his big chance came in that 10th with massive uppercuts and heavy overhand rights ( can see dat in slow motion at the end of the 10th) and in the 11th when people really got up in their feet but again, PW shook it off and won the fight 8-4 or 7-5...

 

You're right. I guess PW's 100+ punches thrown per round had nothing to do with that. That tends to slow down a guy's output when you are getting peppered with that many punches per round. And you factor in his height and reach and Marg was a guy who was stunned to face a guy of his abilities.

I had it 8-4 PW. I could maybe see it 7-5. But no way did Marg come close to winning.
