Abel said that because he wanted to light a fire under Golovkin's ass. They knew beforehand that they weren't winning a decision if it was remotely close and he needed GGG to dominate the last rounds. He wanted more volume from Golovkin.
The second fight was REALLY close. No way you can just say GGG won the fight. Yeah, maybe on your scorecard....
Had both fights a draw but first fight I couldn’t give Canelo another round so for me anything from 8 - 4 and 6 - 6 is acceptable fight 1. Fight 2 could go either way for me
I had it 7-5 Canelo but have to disagree with you. No way was that a clear victory for him. That fight was as close as it gets. It´s why so many are calling it a robbery. 7-5 Golovkin would be totally fine in my books.
Thiss is exactly what I don't get.. Dumbasses that think the second fight was closer... No it wasn't GGG won 8-9 rounds in the second fight... People like to think moving forwards or backwards means something... No, landing punches is quite clearly the ultimate priority in boxing and that's what Golovkin did in the majority of the rounds in the second fight
In the post-match interview, Abel said that Canelo won and Golovkin lost, although Golovkin had actually won the match (because he had landed more punches than Canelo did). Therefore Golovkin dumped Abel Sanchez afterwards.
Why did Canelo take his ball and go home then. Getting a draw that everybody thought you lost then edging a close fight on the cards isn't enough to claim you've proven you're better than a rival and don't need to fight again. It's ludicrous.
Okay, I think I remember well. In the post-match Abel gave the interview below, I highlighted the parts with yellow which made GGG dump him: “It’s two great fighters. This content is protected . We’ve gotta give This content is protected . It doesn’t happen every night, This content is protected ” “ This content is protected . I’m happy for the fans. The fans won tonight. I think that they were uninspired from the first one, I think they’re very inspired from this one.” “ This content is protected .” “We as coaches can only coach them and do the best we can in the gym and have a game plan. When we get in there, they see things that maybe are better for them. We can’t force them to do something they don’t want to do. I’m sure that Chepo and Eddy didn’t want Canelo to fight the way he fought the first time. This content is protected . But when they get in there, they’re gonna do what they think is best. They’re the ones getting hit.” “I wanted Golovkin to fight Canelo. If Canelo was gonna stand in the middle of the ring, This content is protected He had a great jab going.” “ This content is protected I thought that the 12th round was the pivotal round. I said to Golovkin in the corner that I thought we were behind in about the 8th or 9th, and I told him I needed the rounds at the end. I thought it was even, but you know what? This content is protected ” This content is protected
Fair enough. Golovkin never dumped him because of that though. It was a dispute over money. If Sanchez had agreed to the terms he'd still have been coaching GGG.
This is very interesting. You and Odins beard are claiming that Canelo did better in the first match than he did in the rematch. While we disagree on who won each match, I do agree with you in the sense that Canelo did better the first time and GGG had more success in the rematch. However, as you know, the vast majority of fans do not see it this way, the vast majority of fans see the rematch as a toss up and the first match as a "more clear" GGG win than in the rematch. Further, the press scoring had a lot more Canelo winning scorecards in the rematch than they did in the first match. We both agree that Canelo did better the first time. I had Canelo winning the first match wider than I thought he won the rematch, while you and Odins beard had GGG winning the rematch wider than you had him winning the first match. This highlights a pretty substantial disconnect between the press scoring, the consensus and our view of which match Canelo did better in. Many people point to the press scoring as evidence that more people thought GGG won either match, but how can we rely on that if so many more had Canelo winning the rematch than they had Canelo winning the first match?
I have been saying for years that I thought Canelo did better in the first match than he did in the rematch. We may disagree on who won, but we agree about which match Canelo did better in. But of course, as we know, far more fans and in the press had Canelo winning the rematch than they did the first match, so what does that tell you?
Again I had GGG winning both, however I will admit I thought Canelo lost their first fight more than Golovkin won it, in the same way I thought Lara lost the Canelo fight more than Canelo won it, both by not throwing enough, defensively excellent but to economical with their punching. Both Canelo/GGG fights were great, great fights.
