Joe dominated most of the rounds in a sense that he completely negated Hopkins! What a fantastic win. Never gave calzaghe enough credit back in the day!
I know how you feel. Watching it live I was convinced that Hopkins had been robbed but subsequent viewings show how good Calzaghe was that night. A truely fantastic performance that should be admired.
Calzaghe was a physical phenomenon when you think about it. So lithe and mobile yet steely and tough as well. The way he had Hopkins backing up as the fight wore on was impressive. Most fighters are wary and gun shy against B-Hop late on.
Especially when what Hopkins subsequently achieved is taken into account. The finest performance by a British boxer in the last 10-15 years?
But in 20 years time the Calzaghe win over Hopkins will be talked about more no doubt Lacy pre and pro Joe did nothing to be honest and beat no one, performance wise yes perfect from Calzaghe but Lacey was found out that night and will just be seen as a beltholder in years to come Hopkins has the potential to go down as top 10 of all time.
I don't think we will see another unification fight on these shores where the home fighter totally dominates the opponent. it was a sheer masterclass Joe out bullied the bully.
I'll have to disagree with you about that. The Lacy fight was, undoubtably, a fantastic performance and probably the most dominating one I have ever seen by a British fight in recent years in a fight of such magnitude. But, that said, Lacy, as we now know, was hype. Hopkins, by contrast, had proved himself to be one of the best fighters in the World before fighting Calzaghe and reached the zenith of the sport once again afterwards.
people don't really rate the Lacy fight because of hindsight though which is a wee bit unfair on Joe, from what I remember almost everyone to man gave Joe no chance. of course I don't disagree that the more Hopkins achieves the more in enhances Joe's victory.
Conn, Joe MADE Lacy hype. He ruined him with that beating. What the **** was Dan Birmingham doing letting him out after the sixth round? He was getting hammered, his face was ripped open, and he couldn't connect with anything. A really shameful performance from the corner. He had no business taking that beating.
correct, mentally Lacy was never the same, a puncher like Naz, who was also never the same after MAB made him look like hype
