I was there that night and Shaw instructed Dan to throw the towel in about 20 seconds left in round 12 . :-(
Dan Birmingham that night, as you say, was a complete disgrace and should forever feel nothing but embarrassment for what unfolded. Quick thought though: Was Calzaghe the only active fighter who could have done that to Lacy and how many others could have got such a perfromance against Hopkins as he did?
That is not really true. Naz fought his real world class test and got found out and add to that his head had not been in the game for a while sinc ehe had left Ingle. Similar to Lacy they were both built upto to something they were not.
No doubt his confidence was crushed after the Calzaghe fight but who had Lacey fought his best win was against Robin Reid ffs lol RJJ a shot to **** RJJ did just a good a job on Lacey as did another fighter who was not in his prime or his best weight Jermaine Taylor. The Hopkins win will go down in history of one of the best by a British fighter.
I had Hopkins winning by a point but it was close so wasn't bothered either way. Win is much bigger for Calzaghe considering what BHop has done since then.
Not going to speculate on Hopkins - he's a nightmare for anyone. But I believe Kessler would have taken Lacy out in the first six rounds. He was a monster at that point. Joe was always better, but Mikkel had the power, the technique and speed to destroy Lacy. But I don't think it would have done the damage Joe did to him long-term. And in fairness, Lacy's shoulder went after his next fight and he never had the power he once did.
Lacy was a shell of himself by then. His shoulder and his confidence were gone. He lost to Jermain Taylor shortly before. Lacy had some decent wins: Vanderpool, Reid, Pemberton. Respectable and comparable to the guys Joe had been beating.
TOP post, Jeff. Every couple of months some deluded idiot over in the General forum will start a thread trying to rewrite history claiming Hopkins won, only to be thoroughly schooled on the issue. I would've liked to have seen Sugar Joe start the fight a little more focused and not so full of beans, but still, he kept pushing the pace and made the necessary adjustments to pull out a historic overseas victory which leaves his critics full of anger and bitterness to this day :bbb:happy:rofl:yep.
Nah not true. MAB vs Naz was a lot closer than Calzaghe vs Lacey. MAB never dished out a career ending beating in the same way Calzaghe did that night.
Naz's performance against MAB was a LOT better than people remember and, although he clearly lost, it was far from the schooling some remember it as. Naz simply had what he wanted in life and quit. The MAB fight just hastened the decision.
