I thought I'd check this bout out again for the first time since it was on live. Anyway...the first time I watched it, I thought Clottey was terrible and didn't put much effort into his performance. However, I don't know what has changed since then, but I thought Clottey did ok after rewatching it. Of course he could have threw more and not relied so heavily on his defense. But, I honestly think he may have done near enough the best he could that night...and I know a lot are going to disagree with that. But Pacquiao was keeping Clottey occupied for the majority of the round...whether that was hitting his arms and gloves, or trying to break through his defense. Clottey had about 20-30 seconds each round to try and land on Pacquiao whenever Pacquiao took a breather...obviously Clottey could have put more effort into these short bursts he had, especially if he knew Pacquiao was having a rest. Everytime Clottey had some success in cornering Pacquiao or getting him onto the ropes, Pacquiao's speed and volume punching would get him out of trouble. Anyway, I thought it was on ok performance by Clottey...clearly not his best. What I noticed from this bout again though, was how Pacquiao couldn't break through Clottey's defense...and literally stood there with his hands fairly low. Clottey was hesitant to throw because he was wary of the speed. However, what happens if Pacquiao can't break through Mayweather's defense...will he become frustrated like he did against Clottey? Because honestly, I think Mayweather is going to hit Pacquiao whenever there is an opening...and I can't see Pacquiao's speed and voluming punching getting him out of trouble as much against Mayweather as it did against Clottey.
what difference does it make. Are you going claim the same thing as booradley did "If you didnt see the Pavlik/Rubio fight in HD quality then you couldnt see the improvements Pavlik made"
My opinion of the fight was like this at the time... Rd 1 - Not bad from Clottey, just needs to be a bit more active. Rd 2 - Clottey just needs to be a bit more active. Rd 3 - He needs to be more active. Rd 10 - Don't just stand there, throw some punches you ****ing useless *******!
Thats exactly what I was like watching it the first time...not because I wanted to see Pacquiao lose, but to see a somewhat competitive bout.
It's frustrating when you've stayed up until 5am to watch someone go out there and not even attempt to have a go from the moment the bell went. It could have been worse, I could have been somewhere were it was PPV.
I thought so to, Anthony. There was a point early in the fight when Clottey tried to go toe to toe with Manny but got outgunned and caught, and visibly hurt. From then on, he recoiled into that turtle-shell defense, afraid to take any more semblance of risk for the rest of the fight. As to how the May-Manny fight would unfold, the old cliche applies: styles makes fights. May is not so much known for his turtle-shell defense, he's more of the slick mover catch-me-if-you-can type.
Just watched it again, think clottey was pretty solid he done much better than i first thought. Thing is when someone is throwing rapid bombs at you for 3 minutes every round your bound to keep your guard up!! Maybie his game plan totally changed when he realised just how fast/strong manny actually was.He had some success but overall i think it was a solid performance from manny.
Aren't you the casual boxing fan who is going to stop watching boxing, and replace it with UFC if Mayweather Pacquiao doesn't happen? FAIL :scaredas:!
To be honest, Clottey did what no-one up at these higher weight classes has been able to do...cope with Pacquiao's speed, even if he had to cover up for the majority of the bout. Cotto tried to counter Pacquiao's speed by throwing wild shots, and we seen how that turned out. Clottey did land some good shots when he got the chance, but he didn't really plant his feet and put much force into his shots.
