Me personally I only gave Jones 3 rounds at best, I don't see how anyone can give him more than that, he just shelled up after awhile and just stood there to last to a decision.
People gave Jones round 2? Take the blinkers off. There was a 20 second period where Calzaghe pounded Jones on the ropes and he was beating him to the punch throughout the round. You cannot win rounds by landing a few good single shots. And people gave him round 3?? :rofl:rofl I find that round a bit embarrassing for Jones. Calzaghe's just hitting him effortlessly, loads of good shots to the body, shot after shot just landing with nothing coming back.
just re-watching the fight again on setanta now. as always i really like the way joe came back after he was knocked down in the 1st. i like the way after every time he has ever been knocked down he shows the balls to come out and fight fire with fire straight away instead of going into survival mode.
I am amazed by some of this, round 3 was one of the most 1 sided of the year, how someone could give Jones 1-6 I don't know. Think I gave Jones 1, and scored 2 and another as draws. The blinkeredness never ceases to amaze me.
In spite of what you may think of Jones, that same tempo that overwhelmed him overwhelmed good prime fighters like Kessler, Bika, and Lacy
the only reason rjj was still standing that night, was because of joe´s lack of power.. any elite fighter with good power, is going to knock jones out in the later rounds, he simply doesnt have the stamina or legs to go through 12 anymore.. to me this wasnt close.. after the first 6, i had joe up by 1, after that joe took over, rjj went into a shell and joe landed a fair share of punches, had he been able to put something behind his punches ala tarver or johnson, jones would been carried out of the ring.. jones should not get praise for surviving.. thats crazy.. calzaghe should be critisized for not being able to ko him.. rjj is shot to ****, and in his prime he would have picked joe apart. while he still had a little stamina left, he was clearly the better fighter.. but he couldnt consistently keep up with the pace, and that would never have been an issue in his prime.. i had this fight 10-2 or 9-3 in favour of cal
I think if we look at physical skills, Roy Jones skills are eroded but not "shot" as the original poster points out how "physically" Roy was in the fight. However, in boxing, the real definition of shot should be considered from an emotional and psychological point of view. Does the fighter have the hunger and desire to win. A cut, unless by a headbut, is part of the game. By this definition, these guys could then be considered "shot". Any excuses you make for these guys (Roy, Oscar), it just seemed to show in their recent fights that they could not come back from adversity. No answers, no display as if they ever won a fight that was not going their way. They all look great in training, but when it came time to the big show they just seemed to not want it as much as the other guy. I do give Roy a lot of credit for finishing. But whatever happened in his life after that first Tarver fight definitely affected his ability to dominate and take advantage of opportunities to finish off his opponents. Floyd Mayweather Jr. says the most important thing in the ring is FOCUS. Without this, you lose.
