Jones was lucky to get the decision v Tarver, Hopkins dropped him and dominated him. Winky Wright at 170lbs is in a completely different league to Tito Trinidad at 170lbs coming off a 3-year lay-off. Yes, those well-known boxing geniuses, the Setanta announcers, were in dreamland. Once Calzaghe had shaken off the affects of the KD in round one, the result was never in doubt. When you can lean into your opponent with no guard and a smile on your face because you know full well your opponent has been shot for years and would wilt soon enough, the fight is not close even though it may be temporarily numerically close.
I don't have anything constructive to say on this thread, but this post did stick out as it's relatively rare that someone contradicts themself in the space of consecutive sentences. Is Tarver great, or merely decent? Which one is it?
Somewhere in between I bunched Tarver in with Wright as I think Wright is a great fighter and I think Tarver was a great win for Hopkins because of his performance that night. For Jones to be knocked out by Tarver is not being knocked out by a great fighter like Duran was by Hearns - it cannot be underplayed due to the quality of the opponent. Pre-2003, Tarver would have had no chance v Jones.
so let me get this str8. The announcers said the fight was close. And RJ was slowing down the pace. I had RJ up by a round. HBO had a draw. Your saying nothing off the sort. HMM, whos in dreamland here? Again the perception isnt what it was man
Wow. Just... wow. You couldnt see Joe winning a round before round 6? Please, let us know how to score a fight. Don't get me wrong... Jones was won the first arguably won the second and was fairly competitive through to the 5th but won those 5? Not a chance.
The truth doesn't have to be insightful.....sometimes the obvious needs to be stated Hows that "ATG Top 300000 Fighters I've Never Seen But Read About In A Big Book" List going???? Seminal stuff.....your lists are weighty pieces of boxing literature
I don't care what anyone says, I have watched and studied boxing my whole adult life, I make my own decisions. My opinion of the fight by the halfway stage was that Jones got a KD in the first and that made the score closer than it should have been. Jones had scored with a few decent shots and had rallied in a couple of rounds, but the result was never in any doubt. Calzaghe had another few gears to go, and he had already taken control by then. He was already toying with Jones as he knew Jones had very little left. You still haven't defined what you think the cut eye did to Jones - did it affect his stamina, his workrate and/or his punchpower????
was wrong wit that assesment I meant 2 type dependin on how u judge it couldve been that way I had RJ winnin rounds 1,2,5
Here he is again, my own private stalker. Do you ever post on boxing or is your sole reason for posting to talk about me???
Jones won 1 and 2 Maybe 6 if you give him the big uppercut over workrate Other than that for every shot Roy landed Joe replied to As for the knockdown....how the hell Calzaghe got up from a forearm I'll never know
You're just always here posting nonsense about 'facts' Like a bad smell You adore or abhore Calzaghe I've yet to decide
If this were an amateur fight, I ask you this who wouldve been leading? See even with round 3, Calzaghe landed some good shots. But most of them were blocked. RJ was guardin n tellin him 2 come on, and in between he was landing shots as well. Rewatch it. They both were landing shots. But the perception, the crows awwin when calzaghe ahs roy backed up the dancing. Everythin plays a part on how you score the rounds.
ok even if u score it that way. How does that prove Calzaghe was spankin him? Doesnt that mean the fight was close be4 the 7th?
It was closer than expected but Calzaghe was more often than not doing enough to win the rounds, and round 3 had to be a Calzaghe round even if you're adverse to his amateur style merely because Jones never landed anything to turn the judges eyes From round 3 onwards Calzaghe was essentially toying with Jones.....it's only due to the lack of punching power that the fight was as competitive as it was, Calzaghe doen't stop people these days and so it was always going to be 12 rounds of workrate A lot of skill too....I liked his performance in that fight, albeit against an old fighter but he looked good
