Great fight, Roy really dug deep in that fight but it was obvious he wasnt the same Jones. I remember the rematch, I was actually in Pensacola at the time. Jones wasnt even taking his training seriously. Instead of in the gym he was on base playing basketball 3 times a week. Anyways that was the last of Roy Jones throwing combinations and staying busy.
great fight, one of my favourite jones performances. you're bang on mking, he dug deep and showed heart. he took it in the last two rounds and was brilliant
that should have been his farewell fight. the one time he had to show real heart. had he retired then people would now be talking about him as top 5 atg.
yup...but he turned into a competitive spirit once his skills left. now that he has something to prove, a legacy to fight for, he wants to show the world what he's got; it isn't enough anymore
the longer he fights on to prove he wasnt over rated, the more the critics pounce on his shite chin and defence. in his prime he was far too quick for anyone to bother him, that just aint the case today
This was one gutsy performance by Jones ..He didn't have to fight Tarver but he felt he had to prove his critics wrong .
you know that's a good point. i always thought it was tarver's reluctance in the last few rounds and jones' heart but the body work likely paid late dividends and roy had more in the tank
They will be anyway 10 years after his last fight. When a fighter goes into his final slide, his contemporaries always think it compromises his legacy, but history tends to put everything into perspective, just like it did with Ali and SRR.
Roy was more calm and those bodyshots like you said did pay dividends so he could finish strong later on which he did. It toke heart to win that fight and as far as being "glass chinned" his whole career, he toke flush straights from Hopkins in the first fight and I think Toney landed flush a few times too. Lets just remember Roy for what he once was. His current fight performances have no effect on what he did for his sport. He will deserve his spot in the HOF. Remember he was Mr. Unstoppable lol. Overtime I think people will forget his fights with say Glen, Calzaghe, Tarver 2, and Green. People should highlight the key points in his career but it'll take time.
Excellent point. Ezzard Charles is another great example. He got clubbed at the end of his carer, and some consider him a top ten great. Keith
