Jones won rounds 1 & 2 , and kept the fight competitive up to round 6 or so. Jones is not shot, despite what anyone says. He's far removed from his prime, but he's not even close to being shot. He looked just as good in this fight as he did against Trinidad, but he just got outworked and outsmarted, plain and simple. One thing he needs to stop doing, is laying on the ropes and letting the other guy unload on him. He did that against Tarver and it's just not a good idea for him. If he would have tied up Calzaghe when he was n the ropes, and kept the fight in the middle of the ring, he would of had a chance at winning. Very entertaining fight.
the thing is against Trinidad everyone thought he was shot. he looked terrible against trinidad. Roy Jones actually said in an interview before the Tito fight: "If i don't knock Tito out, i know i should retire" HE SAID IT HIMSELF
rambo even most brits thought Jones was shot before the Calzaghe fight. Even Calzaghe said he was shot. So its not an american thing. I am not American adn I'm a fan of Calzaghe. But Jones not shot? are you serious? What about his KO loss to Glen Johnson? Is Glen Johnson a greater fighter than Roy Jones?

Are we talking about the same RJJ who couldn't take out Trinidad. Who said before the fight with Tito that if he can't knock him out he will retire
i think people should give the 'shot' business a rest, its fuking boring. Yes RJJ isnt a young athlete anymore, he was still in fantastic condition though, much better than the tito fight.
Of course he is shot. Come on people. Roy hasn't been the same fighter since he barely won against tarver in their first fight. A prime roy would of whupped Joe's butt. U mean to tell me he couldn't throw more punches in that fight? Why couldn't he? Joe left himself open almost the whole fight. And Roy didn't even counter. If that's not shot, I don't know what is.
Its pretty obvious that Jones is no where near the old Jones but he has slowly improved since the 3 defeats and he is in a posistion now were he is still a good fighter. The Jones yesterday would have given most fighters from 160-cruiserweight a good fight and would have beaten many of them. However, as good as Jones is now, and he really is a good fighter, he is still a far way of a prime Jones. I have seen a few people mention the KO's of Jones by Johnson and Tarver and say does that qualify them as great fighters like people are claiming Joe is because he beat Jones. I dont think this is a valid point. It is clear to see that the rapid weight loss greatly affected Jones and this was the sole cause of his stunning defeats. Chris Byrd and Tarver himself are two recent examples of the deterimental effects of rapid weight loss to a fighter, especially when the weight lost is muscle. I would go as far to say that the Jones who fought Joe last night, whislt still a shadow of the prime Roy like i said earlier, is still a better fighter than the Roy who got KO'ed by Tarver and Johnson.
Jones being shot is an overstatement. What Jones is, is a guy who relied too much on his natural speed and reflexes and not nearly as much on fundamental boxing skills like BHop and Calzaghe did. That's why they aged better than Roy. They had to become better craftsmen in the ring because they didn't rely nearly as much on natural speed advantages as Roy. That's better explains the whole "shot" thing.
The fact that he was able to stay competitive even though he is clearly shot says a lot more about how the matchup would've gone down prime for prime. Do you guys somehow think he's improved since his losses to Tarver and Johnson, when he was thought to have been shot? Even in his wins over the likes of Hanshaw and a smaller, equally shot Tito Roy looked done on the world class level, just nowhere near what he used to be, and those were his best performances. This matchup doesn't prove he wasn't shot, as he had been for the past 4 years. It just proves that for whatever small period of time he is still able to show flashes of brilliance here and there, and that if the matchup were made in Jones's prime it would've been a COMPLETELY different fight.
Calzaghe said it himself, RJJ is shot a few years back, and then suddenly after Roy Jones beats Trinidad, Calzaghe calls him tought opposition.
Jones IS shot as ****. The last time he truely looked great was the Ruiz fight in 2003. He looked as good as he did in the Trinidad fight? What are you talking about he looked like **** in the Trinidad fight. Trinidad was retired and bloated well past his best weight. Jones should have been able to KO Trinidad as others pointed out. And before anyone tries to call me an agry Jones fan making excuses, search my posts, check the bet thread. I was saying Jones was shot and predicting a Calzaghe win, even considering a Calzaghe KO before the fight.
He is 39 and hasnt looked good in 5 years, in 2003. Since then he won a close decision in Tarver I. KTFO twice. Ran all night in Tarver 3 and considered it a victory just to not be KOed. Fought two nobodies to get some wins for a change. Fought Trinidad out of retirement for the money. That is the very definition of shot.
Yeah it's funny then that Calzaghe himself was of the stance that Jones was shot right up until he got offered shitloads of money to fight him.
