While Mayweather is no longer in his prime, I don't see a dramatic drop off. Just like speed had the effect of making Hopkins look like a shot fighter, consistent, mauling pressure can make Mayweather look less than stellar. People talk about how Maidana landed the most punches that anyone has ever landed on Floyd, but Jesus Chavez landed the most punches per round(that fight was stopped after the 9th round). Floyd was in peak form against Chavez and the fight took place in a huge ring. Floyd still languished against the ropes at times and got hit with some shots you're not used to seeing him hit with. He also landed at a very high rate like he did against Maidana. Of course, Maidana had almost 20 lbs. on Mayweather while Chavez was much smaller. I could be wrong about how I 'm looking at this, but we'll see. Pacquiao is smaller than Mayweather and he is not a swarming pressure fighter. He is a hall of famer though and is still very fast. We'll see what happens.
Styles. Canelo has a similar style to JMM, very textbook, boxer style. Floyd deals with that so easily, his whole pad work it to constantly train his reflexes against conventional punches. When unconventional punches like Maidana's come at him, it confuses him for a bit.
Maidana was all over Floyd. It was more of physical affair than a boxing match. Canelo didn't make it ugly, he tried to box. Two very different opponents. But, he has slowed down. Still faster than Pac has seen in ages.
What does this add to the thread? Manny got KO6 by Marquez 4 fights ago. In the process, has dominated Bradley, Rios, and Algieri. I don't think Manny is worried about getting KO'd in this fight.
I agree and I am always noting styles do indeed make fights. My point was Maidana is a B level fighter. A guy who is good enough to become a champion but not good enough to hold it for a while. The Canelo version of Floyd would have beaten Maidana 10-2 at minimum. He was completely flustered with Maidana and got caught plenty of times. And honestly, Floyd did not look any better in the rematch. I'm not saying the first fight was refereed properly, but Bayless allowed no holding at all. Floyd may have been slightly better, but overall he was still caught a lot. Reflexes and speed are elements you don't ever really gain back.
Yeah and it also took Marquez 42 rounds to land that shot, during a fight Pac was looking the best he had in a while. The thing that really concerns me, is with punches coming so fast from such awkward angles, carried by such quick feet...what the boxing world has always thought was that Mayweathers amazing reflexes, and quick counters was what would neutralize PAC. PAC throws from just as awkward angles as Maidana does. Only much faster, with better timing and from a southpaw stance.
watching Maidana 2 and comparing it to Floyd from the Guerrero fight, he's slowed down a bit. Unsurprising really. He's in the twilight of his career. With that said, I think Maidana has a way of making fights ugly and perhaps people aren't giving him enough credit. He's improved quite a bit under Garcia.
All these questions about floyds slowing down and how he hasnt looked that great recently and how he hasnt seen the speed of someone like manny is just another way of saying floyd hasnt fought anybody great in their prime and manny is as close to a prime elite fighter floyd has ever gotten and we just dont know how its going to play out. Is floyd going to look as great as hes looked at his best against his usual flat footed slow mexican opponents? Is mannys speed and power going to show floyd to be human after all? May 2nd we get all the answers. Whos watching Avengers 2 that weekend?
Maybe he just wasn't focused enough. Getting too caught up on the promotion side. He'll be in 100% form come fight night. I mean...have you seen him? He's in the best shape of his life and is crazy determined.
Packing on that extra muscle and changing training regimens at his age, may be counter productive, it also may be a sign that has lacking in other areas.
