yeah, got it on my dvr... its amazing how many peeps were in denial when Tyson got knocked out, and everyone gave a million excuses why he lost. I really believed in it too, when i was a kid. 1) Tyson was in Japan building his marketing there, fight a B-lvl opponent he was planning on steamrolling like others.... 2) Tyson didnt take Douglas seriously and obviously didnt do a strong training camp, the fight shows his lack of intensity 3) Buster Douglas took this fight VERY seriously, and did his work physically training and also working on key boxing abilities vs Tyson 4) Simply outboxed Tyson - stiff jab followed w/ a short flurry and hit/run seems to really confuse Tyson and his spacing. Douglas caught him sitting in No Mans Land too much and eventually wore him down for a KO.. Its a great fight which shows how over-confidence can undermine you as a boxer, training and in the ring, and also how hungry a young lion can be to prove himself even in the greatest of odds... The Douglas/Tyson fight became the blueprint on how to stymie Tyson..
great post. buster was throwing everything in the book at tyson. the straight rights and right uppercuts were priceless.
Mike Tyson had recently sacked his trainer Kevin Rooney, the one who made him train seriously, probably helped by the connection to Cus D'Amato. Without rooney, Mike could do whatever he wanted. His new trainer Aaron Snowell later said that Tyson refused to go jogging and did not train nearly enough for this fight. Even being unprepared, Tyson put Douglas on the canvas for 14 seconds - and was robbed by the ref. Excuses? Of course. But sometimes excuses are true. Let me ask you this: would you have bet on Douglas if he had given Tyson a rematch?
Tyson's entire camp was a shambles. imagine having your trainer use a rubber glove filled with water and ice as a make sure bruise iron?! The other fact as well, Tyson wasn't use to the fact that Douglas was taking his best shots and that Douglas wasn't to be denied. I watched this fight about 2 months ago, Douglas finished him off well.
i've still got this fight on tape from when i watched it live, though i haven't viewed this fight for about 10 years now. it is by far the most shocked i have ever been watching a fight. you had to be around at the time to understand the invincability that surrounded tyson, i never thought i would see him come close to losing a boxing match. 3 things ruined tyson 1 - losing kevin rooney - monumental error, the head movenment and the combination punching dissapeared after rooney 2 - women - took away his focus from boxing 3 - lifestyle - playing the big man out of the ring with his gangster roots, not living a discaplined professional life, and believing his own hype. he lost hunger and focus. people can moan about the long count but that wasn't douglas' fault, he has to get up before the ref counts to 10 and he did that. 2 things happenned that night - tysons level wained - buster douglas fought the fight of a life-time, he was brilliant.
Bill Cayton commented that he believed Tyson had starved himself going into that fight just to make weight
