Lewis exposed Tua as a limited brute force fighter with incredible punching power but who can unfortunately be outboxed rather easily. Lewis also showed that using ones brain and risking a boring fight can be smarter than frantically trying to trade toe-to-toe with a puncher. Yes the fight was super boring but I don't blame Lewis. He did the right thing.
Good post. You gotta pick your battles when it comes to looking good. Had Lewis taken any other approach than the one he did against Tua he would have been increasing Tua's chances of landing a big punch. Sometimes you just gotta forget about the crowd and get the win. Boring or not, Lewis put on a boxing clinic against Tua.
Agreed. What surprised me at the time was the big money and backing for the Tuaman going into the fight. There was a lot of it. Hell man, folks backed Tua up to a 7-1 favorite over Byrd. Then again, most boxing fans analyze everything from the shoulders up and then make their assertions of the fight. Things like turning a guy aren't really brought into the equation much. That happens after the bout of course when the guy is deemed a bum. Very few people look at things like footwork and mobility and if you do, I'd sure didn't see where Tua was going to have much of a chance against Lewis. He'd have to make 2-3 steps to land and this particular opponent is not going to wait for that to happen. A much better matchup for Tua back then would've been Evander who does get hit.
