I lean towards the Rex Layne before the Marciano KO loss (which was brutal) Layne took a good punch and was rugged and hit hard. Floyd had fast hands and hit hard so not a sure bet but I think Laynes pressure could make the difference.
Floyd by very early KO. A complete mismatch. Layne didn't possess a single fast-twitch fibre. The very definition of unathletic.
I lean Patterson, Ingo was a more polished Layne and Patterson dealt with him twice. Layne wouldn't make it easy, very game fighter.
Boxing isnt a 40 yard dash. Layne has a good gas tank, toughness and a solid right. Patterson is more explosive than any heavyweight who ever lived and still found himself losing frequently.
Sometimes it is. Layne has no upside. His workrate really wasn't exceptional, nor was his power. And he flat out admitted that Willie Pastrano hurt him badly so let's not oversell that chin. A Poor Man's Pierre Coetzer is flattering praise. I'm almost embarrassed by gushing so much over him.
Layne wasn't that well conditioned,he was vulnerable to body punches, which is why Goldman told Marciano to target his midriff. Even a past prime Patterson held is own with Ellis and Quarry, both better than Layne imo. Patterson dealt with strong guys who had power Chuvalo,Bonavena, Chuvalo would give Layne a tough nights work ,and Bonavena would beat him imo. I think Floyd beats Layne and convincingly. He has the speed, the power and the boxing class.Layne is overated in my book.
But Layne wasn't even that strong. He was all kinds of doughy and only 200 pounds. Dempsey complained about Rex's lack of strength and said he really needed to commit himself to conditioning.
