Patterson would blast him out in the end, and so would Dempsey (since he's been mentioned and we know the threads gonna dovetail).

Patterson gets a win here. From what I've read about Layne I can see Floyd s fast hands working him over, maybe getting a kds over him before stopping him late.

I agree. I didn't know Layne was rated that highly in the vast panoply of great heavyweights.

Patterson late-ish KO, meaning rounds 8-12. Patterson was too quick and had enough power to hurt most. Layne was tough, but too hittable to truly be favored over a great like Patterson. The fight would probably start out with Patterson looking to land combinations and then turn out of the way. Layne would advance on Patterson looking to land a big punch and maybe wrestle with him to try and wear him down. Problem is that Layne was decent and had a strong right hand, but he wasn't a great fighter and is no better than several others of similar ilk that Patterson beat.

In brief summary, the fight would start with them contesting for middle ground and establishing who would be landing the power punches vs who would be forced to wind up and counter. Patterson being much, much faster and way more polished would soon find himself as the one landing the better punches more frequently. Come the mid rounds Patterson would take over and force Layne into a bad position where he is relying on singular big punches to try and turn the fight around. Come the late rounds Patterson would be driving home combinations that would end the night.

He should be favoured with confidence imo, simply because he beat better fighters than Layne . And he didn't have to rely on dubious Dempsey decisions!
Better boxer ,better defence, faster hands , at least equal in power ,[ superior imo] ,better conditioned.
    Q. Where does Layne have an edge?

    A, Nowhere!

Since when was Layne the Pissing Bollocks? Patterson takes his head off.

Just a highlight, but can you really see Layne landing a lot on Patterson?

I can't.I think Jimmy Ellis would destroy Layne and an old Floyd arguably beat Jimmy.

Layne definitely has the edge in durability, and he is a bad style for Patterson.

There were those who thought that he was going to be the next big thing.

Obviously we know how that turned out.

Sluggers with poor defence are not bad style matchups for Patterson.
How many punchers did Layne face? Patterson stopped common opponent Jackson twice without being floored. Jackson stopped Layne 2 out of 2.
    No definitely about it, imo.
    Patterson fought;
    Durelle x2
    Listonx2
    Johannson x3
    Bonavena
    Quarry x2
    Ellis
    Cooper
    Moore
If anything Floyd's chin is the more proven imo!

I'm pretty sure a lot of that was based on his complexion!

No I don't think that he was.

Layne is exactly the kind of fighter that has always generated excitement, and high expectations, early in their career!

A slugger is always problematic for a pressure fighter, even if the pressure fighter has better defense.
Layne's chin is more proven precisely because his defense was worse!
