For me a robbery is a decision that falls outside the bounds of reasonable interpretation, and I ham not convinced that this is what we have here. This is reading a lot more like a controversial decision to me. For example if the first or third unofficial score card were anything like, then it would almost certainly be possible to score the fight for Layne.
I have not been able to dig up a source yet, but I remain confident of what I have said. Look at the sequence of events here: Rex Layne is the first man to beat Charles after he loses the title. Your own source says that the IBC moves Lane to mandatory position for Marciano. Roland LaStarza is the first man to beat Layne, after he beats Charles. You can see how it would have happened!
A 1950 Louis is nowhere near the best ever. Unless you want to contradict what every paid observer said at the time.
Obviously he wasn’t but Layne certainly looked decent in the fight and the nest year and a half or two years were very good for him getting wins over Walcott, Thompson, and Williams conqueror Satterfield. This isn’t the same Layne that looked like **** frankly post Marciano.
Thompson had lost his last 2 ,his previous fight was a defeat to15-8-6 Frank Buford.he would have 2 more lose them and retire .Past his sell by date. Satterfield was ko'd 13 times.
Satterfield has wins over Baker, Johnson and the great Cleveland Williams (am I allowed to mention that? Not trying to gaude u but was good win ). He was no bum. Walcott was better then anyone in this 80s list and I’d favor prime Walcott over most and make him even money with some of the better ones.
Satterfield wasnt ranked ,I said Thompson was ranked to give him the benefit of the doubt[ I dont have monthly ratings] certainly his results do not justify him being ranked in1950 . This leaves Brion hardly awe inspiring and Walcott his only real standout . Id pick literaly dozens of heavyweights across the era's to beat Layne ,and not even top tier guys. Adamek Rahman Maskaev Norris Golota Hide etc
Def can see Rahman winning but the others he’s pretty even with in my book...to me it’s a story of two Laynes. First one was a real contender (training always in question though) second one just showed up for a check only showing up when his Star was starting to fade. Then eventually fully fizzling out. Not that dissimilar from Golota (career not style) imo. Although he was better then Golata at his best imo. Personally I don’t like making excuses for fighters he was what he was. Inconsistent later on.
Layne's record pre RM doesn't impress me at all Ten of his first 30 odd fights were against light heavies. 32 of his career 50 wins are against dross.
