Layne was better than we think. An underrated warrior. Quarry was a very good contender during the 70s

Prime Layne is extremely underrated on this forum. Just as good as Lyle. Hits not as hard but has better stamina. Quarry was made to beat guys like him though. Straight forward boxers he ate up.

I don’t know but if he could beat Charles he’d have a great shot with Quarry.

Look at his record it’s right there.
You haven’t seen the bout or have you? the guy who has on this forum says he won I’m inclined to give Layne his due he was an impressive fighter while it lasted.

Yes he did beat Charles (a close fight counts as a win) And Walcott and Satterfield and Turkey Thompson. He has a good resume. He was also a different fighter pre Marciano. He had looked good against Walcott even late in the game. But I agree with u. I think Quarry wins but based on his style.

I know he got the decision,my point is,did he deserve it?
In a blatantly obvious hometown decision, Referee Jack Dempsey scored 2 rounds for Layne, 1 round for Charles with 7 rounds even. Most objective observers felt Charles had won. During the fight Layne butted Charles repeatedly without caution from the referee.

Legendary cornerman and trainer Ray Arcel said,"Instead of adding dignity to the fight game, Dempsey has added disgrace."

"While there still may reamin lingering doubts in the minds of some fight fans as to the superiority of Rex Layne over Ezzard Charles, the International Boxing Club made its stand clear Saturday by offering Layne a title shot at the winner of the Rocky Marciano-Jersey Joe Walcott fight. Even as the fans continued their arguments over referee Jack Dempsey's verdict Friday, which gave the underdog Layne a surprise decision over Charles, the IBC stepped forward with its blessing for Layne." -Salt Lake Tribune

    Unofficial scorecards

    • Ring Magazine - 5-5 Draw
    • Salt Lake Tribune - 6-3-1 Charles
    • Rocky Mountain News - 5-3-2 Charles.
    • Charles put things right in the rematch.
Ezzard Charles 187 lbs beat Rex Layne 203 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10
Charles scored knockdowns in rounds six, seven and ten with Layne out on his feet at the final bell. He also scored a left eye cut and a right eye puff in round six.

Have you seen the bout? @klompton2 has and you can read what he says about it. Arcel was working with (training?) Ezzard Charles that’s hardly the sort of person I’ll get behind gun to my head. Until I can see it I’ll go with the offical result he had a good night with Charles and if he has another one with Quarry he could win.

I haven't seen the bout, and I have read Klompton's opinion.I put an asterisk against the bout on the basis of the press report.
I never said Layne couldn't win,but I would expect Quarry to.

I lean towards Quarry, but he might end up geting drawn into a war with Layne, and the judges might end up seeing it Layne's way.

I think Quarry should win in a manner not to dissimilar from his win over Lyle, but I wouldn't rule out something crazy happening along the way a la Quarry-Chuvalo.
