Layne was actually a pretty good fighter and would be slightly bigger than Spinks. So instead of moving up and fighting Holmes, Spinks moves up and scraps with Rex Layne. Does Spinks get through Layne?

Was just about to make this, then seen that it had already been done.
Layne was consistent at his best, and would catch guys off guard on a bad night, but both at their best, Spinks would thoroughly outbox him and stop him late, he’d predict Layne’s rhythm, force the errors, time him, set him up etc, jabbing to get Layne to commit so he can counter, Layne would often commit lazily and in the same pattern throwing the lazy, unathletic 1-2 and Spinks would time him with a check left hook after Layne’s jab, but before his cross, or just counter the cross with uppercut hook combinations.
Spinks was smarter and would think steps ahead unlike Layne.

I’m going with Spinks. Layne had lesser skills and it wouldn’t be the first time he lost to a light heavy
