Rey Vargas vs. Lucian González, 8 rounds @ super bantamweight

 

Round 1

Blistering attack by Vargas, using the left jab effectively to broom the shorter man across the ring. Combinations sprinkled in by Vargas, standing upright and moving in with his left coming up off the hip to backhand triple jabs. González answering with single hooks up top from a high guard, his timing a beat off.

Round 2

Short uppercuts by Vargas. Cuffing hook on the back of the head by González, catching Vargas with the inside of his elbow, knocking him off-kilter. VARGAS DOWN EARLY! González floored him with an upshot 1-2 on the bottom of the chin. Vargas is up, looking embarrassed. Jabs by Vargas. González is dipping either way as he comes in, floating the right glove to intercept Vargas' jabs and throwing more high 1-2s. Vargas down again, but a slip. Straight flurries by Vargas at mid-range.

Round 3

González is whipping a towel-snap left into Vargas' chest and getting hit with jabs and uppercuts. Nice fast combos by Vargas now, varied to head and body. González hurt. Vargas is throwing in fours and fives, really favoring the uppercut inside. González answers back with bursts of straight punching from a guard up top.

Round 4

González is pressing in boldly, drilling right hands up into Vargas' head. Vargas leads with the wrecking ball right on the body and slashes with the left hook at González's throat. Vargas lopes in sideways, jabbing. Lead right by Vargas. González throws a 1-2 up top, blocked. Vargas is keeping his back straight, chin down, and gloves up now as he comes in. Rapid-fire light jabs from Vargas, and hummingbird-wing left hooks vibrating against González's body.

Round 5

González is holding out his left glove, turned over against his belly, raising it as needed to block the Vargas lead uppercut downstairs or the straight jab at González's eye level. Body combos and long sweeping hooks at the head by Vargas. González is chasing with the jab but Vargas is now in defensive stalking mode, using head movement and catching whatever he doesn't slip on his right mitt.

Round 6

González is hit with a few long jabs and tries jumping over them to nail Vargas with a hook. Vargas is leaning back, stepping in and out, turning González, landing jabs. 1-2 by González knocks Vargas back. Big morning-star right hand by Vargas. González is backed into the ropes by a jab and overhand combo, but only grazed. Body hook by Vargas. González is ducking in and screening the jab on his raised parallel forearms. González throws a fastball right but doesn't reach as Vargas hops back. Looping right by Vargas. High jab by Vargas, near González's hairline. González nudges him off with a glove placed on his chest.

Round 7

González is hopping side to side with arms low. Vargas is throwing huge pendulums downstairs with both hands. González is shoving in and leaving his left arm braced against Vargas' clavicle. Hard looping right by Vargas, doubled up. Jab-jab big overhand by Vargas, lulling with the first two punches. Most of the rights crash into González's chest. Vargas is splaying his reedy legs and kicking his way clockwise around González.
