I've been hearing his name bandied about in a couple of potential match-ups being discussed (Margarito, Rubio, Chavez Jr...), and am a bit puzzled.

Didn't he say directly after the Cotto loss that he was essentially "too old for this ****" and publicly retire from combat sports? :huh

He's out of all the rankings and no longer listed as an active fighter on Boxrec (whose system automatically drops anyone if out of the ring for one year, even if it's known to be a temporary layoff) or the Don King roster or anything...

If anything, I'd expect to hear of him kayoing a few tomato cans in MMA as he'd planned to try a few years ago - and getting paid no worse for it than he was under DK :yep - but to suddenly hear serious talk of him in with several "big names" in boxing is strange. I was sure we'd seen the last of him in any significant bouts.

If he makes a comeback, what can he still do at 154/160 assuming he picks up where he left off against Cotto? Could he upset Margarito? Rubio? Poach a belt from JCC Jr.? :think

If he's well and truly done with his career, what do we make of it looking back? Wins over prime Forrest twice and fat old Vargas, and then losses to every other big name he got in with (depending on whether you want to call Six Heads and The Gent "big names"). A weird little ride, his was. Did well for relying mostly on raw power & bravado/chin - although I will say his actual boxing skills are often underrated. It isn't as though he applied no fundamentals whatsoever at any point.

I think he could compete quite well. He'd likely be the stiffest test for the likes of Canelo and Chavez Jr. given his awkward style, size, and raw power. He came in better shape than expected against Cotto.

Ricardo is the ultimate smack talking villain, he can help promote and sell fights with interviews alone. (that reason alone will get the attentions of foaming at the mouth promoters. I think a fight with him against Chavez Jr (as much of a farce it would be) would sell to casual fans........and HBO would show it.....

He is gonna be used to make Margarito's comeback maybe....(I'll bet this)

    (I hope he KO's Margacheato)

He said shortly after retiring in the ring afetr Cotto that he will be coming back. His twitter is a infinite source for comic relief.

Weird but highly entertaining ride it was with El Matador.

The fight with Trinidad was electric, always gets the hair up on my arm and the build-up to the Vargas fight was an all time great.

I think King will feed him to K-9, Mayorga needs money. Kings took it all.

I'd be keen to see Mayorga back in the ring for one last fight; maybe v a Canelo or similar prospect, fulfilling Mayorga's role as a gatekeeper to a T. Like him or not, the man is still sellable.

We all know the script for a Mayorga fight anyway:

Fight is signed that he doesn't really deserve
Mayorga talks an absolute bunch of **** in the lead up; getting everyone talking about the fight, maybe the outside chance of landing that big punch
Fight starts, Mayorga lands a shot or two before getting dominated
    Mayorga gets KO'd late

    Everyone goes home happy!
