Fernando Vargas or Amir Khan come to mind first, but when we look at the numbers. Ricardo Mayorga lost 9 times in 46 fights (19.57% ratio) https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/chins-list-of-world-champions.644807/
Mayorga's high KO loss ratio is more due to him facing hard punchers and top competition head on, often even without blocking punches, not because of a weak chin. At the end of his career his huge punch resistance was gone though and he still fought the same.
20% KO loss ratio, doesn't mean weak chin. It only shows how chins are Elite level among world champions. The average in boxing is higher 50% KO loss ratio (average boxing chin) The average in the general population is 100% KO loss ratio (weak chin) Hopefully this helps educate folks (ironically folks with weak chins) who are eager to call world champions (weak chinned) At Championship level Weak Chins don't exist, it gets very complex & a Champion needs much more advantages to avoid getting stopped as often as an average boxer. The pressure of putting on a show for the fans or a statement, causes champions to get stopped more often, which is not a bad quality.
Man, boxing powers love guys like mayorga. They stay credible enough to face elite competition by beating guys a tier below, but are outclassed almost everytime they step up (albeit, mayorga best forrest twice!). That high ko loss ratio has more to do with him taking big money fights against guys he could look competitive enough against, but was ultimately a sacrificial lamb.oh well, he got rich in the process. Cant say I blame him
If he can be fit at 147, we can see Mayorga get a couple of big upsets even at advanced age. Matchmakers know this & lure him into higher weights to get a W vs a former world champion, the Lester Martinez Pro-Debut SMW fight last April was cynical, but its the nature of boxing. A gold-medalist Welter should try a pro-debut vs Ricardo Mayorga, that will be a real fight while it lasts.
Good point. I didnt think of it from that angle. His power and speed were way better at that weight. I watched his losing effort against spinks a month or two ago, and he looked terrifying.
He can make 147 easily, even at later years he did it vs Oscar. Obviously no longer at peak, but even today those prospects trying to get his name on their record, can do it in a better way. Challenging him at his best weight class, coming at Welter he has train, instead of walking into the ring as he is. Will also give the prospect attention because Mayorga is a very big name & we will always expect him to upset anybody at Welter, so it will generate genuine interest
