There was some talk about this fight in 2003, as Mayorga had just knocked out Andrew Lewis and Vernon Forrest for welterweight title belts, and Antonio Margarito recently won the WBO belt and knocked out Lewis on HBO.

There apparently was some HBO push for it, but Don King elected to have Ricardo Mayorga go elsewhere, and he ended up having a return bout with Forrest and lost to Cory Spinks at the end of 2003.

If they had fought in 2003, how does this one go?

A fine fight it would have been.

I'd take Margarito by UD as I think he'd be busier and Mayorga's one punch seek and destroy tactic would fail against Margarito's iron beard. If it were the 2007-2008 Margarito I'd take Margo by knockout.

Margarito would have won by 10th rd stoppage, EASILY.

When someone can take Mayorga's shots and has a stronger will than him, Ricardo folds.

Don King disagrees with that, Tony had a Wanted T Shirt on when he knocked out Six Heads Lewis and Mayorga was the man on that shirt, King and Mayorga stayed clear of Tony.

Next week, everyone will change their opinion on Margarito, or just absurdly overrate Cotto after it, let's hope for the first option.

Tito took 8 rounds against an out of shape Mayorga, Vernon couldn't put a dent in him...

Marg, sloppy Marg with his arm punches are going to gain him a KO? Have you guys only been watching boxing for 2 years?:yep

    This would have ruled!

The whole avoided fighter mystique would have been aborted in the womb! ;)

Both will happen Cotto will become a God for beating a limited flawed fighter like Margo and Margo will fade away for good.

Come 2009, Cotto's best win will still have been a no-longer-prime-but-not-yet-shot Mosley. :nod

And that's even if he gets the coveted December date.
