Ricardo Mayorga vs Pipino Cuevas

Ah man, can I ask here so a heads up on the details on what was so interesting about his tactics or do I need to wait for the thread like everyone else...

 

Legs...his legs...they were in top shape that night and they were his principle means of defense. Without those legs Vilomar Fernandez wasn't going to beat anybody, least of all Alexis Arguello. He was in great shape and befuddled AA all night long...moving constantly to his left...maybe not so constantly, because he'd change directions and then go clockwise. He made Alexis constantly have to reset...chase, chase, chase, reset, repeat and rinse. I'm fascinated when a fighter, especially a defensive fighter...one who couldn't crack an eggshell if he tried....utilizes his biggest strength as part of his strategy....and makes it work. It wasn't Vilomar Fernandez's jab, or any of his other punches...no other aspect of his armory, both offensive and defensive that worked for him...it was his legs.

 

Pete Ranzay would likely agree with you. Cuevas brought his title here to Sacramento to defend against Pete. Pipino sent everyone home disappointed as he stretched Ranzany in the 2nd round round. Every time I drive by where old Hughes Stadium was I recall that fight for some reason. Anyway Pete Ranzany could fight he wasn't an easy guy to beat.

 

Cuevas utterly destroyed Ranzany...another ko of Pipino's that's freakish to watch is his ko of Harold Voltbrecht. Cuevas was a welterweight George Foreman...maybe even more powerful p4p.

 

Couldn't agree more Russell.

 

Foreman was a bludgeoning sort of puncher who could club you into unconsciousness. Brutal puncher. But he wasn't known to violently hurt people physically with his shots. Cuevas was.

I'd much rather take on a Foreman equivalent than a Cuevas sort. Cuevas broke his opponents jaws in back to back fights. That's surreal.

 

I was surprised that Ranzany got up from that left hook, the 2nd knockdown. He took a beating. Pete won the 1st round with some sharp punching but he never looked loose and fluid. I think what you guys are saying about Cuevas is true. He had Ranzany intimidated.

 

Would be great fun Mayorga is a total head case and would go for it but ceuvas was a machine ! Mid rounds ko for pipino in a war.

 

Would be the ultimate grudge match. However nobody goes toe to
toe with a prime Pipino and survive's unscathed.
Pipino ko in 6 rds.

 

Pipino breaks Mayorgas face in the 3rd round
