http://www.lep.co.uk/northwestsport/Hatton-set-for-dream-Eastlands.3734815.jp Manchester City fan Ricky Hatton is on the verge of a dream return to the ring at the City of Manchester Stadium in May. The Hitman is close to finalising a deal for a fight at the home of his beloved Blues on May 24. But the Hyde-based star will not face either Junior Witter or Oscar De La Hoya in his first bout since losing to Floyd Mayweather in December. Hatton, back from safari in South Africa, has whittled down a list of 22 potential opponents to four. New Yorker and both IBF light welterweight champion Paulie Malignacci and WBO light-welterweight champion, Colombian Ricardo Torres, are on the shortlist. Hatton said: "It has always been my dream to fight at City's ground and I know my dad is deep in talks with the club to make it come true. I could never fight at Maine Road, but Eastlands is a real prospect." Hatton has not ruled out a future meeting with Witter, who he insists he has unfinished business with after a public war of words between the pair. But the WBC light welterweight champion is already scheduled to face Demetrius Hopkins next month, so will have to wait for his chance to take on Hatton. A crowd of 50,000 could pile into the City of Manchester Stadium, which will be a dream come true for lifelong Blues' fan Hatton. He sees it as repayment to his loyal army of fans who travelled across to America to see his last four fights. He has also resisted massive money from the States to have the fight scheduled in the early hours of the morning (ndash) insisting it will be fought at British time. It will also be a dream for Hatton's father, Ray, who played for City's reserves from 1966-71.
I wouldn't be upset if he fought Torres. It's a good comeback fight, and not a walk in the park. Although since giving Cotto the fight of his life, Torres hasn't looked anywhere near that level again.
Thats wicked! I would really want to see this fight. Yes Torres has not looked like the guy who gave cotto everything he could handle but the combination of a big fight and a high contact fighter might be enough to bring that out of him again. Ricky will have to train hard an be focused if he wants to win. But Torres is very beetable. From a management point of view this would be just the type of fight to get Ricky refocused and build his confidence.
Hatton - Torres is a good fight. Witter - Hopkins should be put pn the undercard, it wont be, but it should.
Torres is a really good, tough fighter, but I just fancy Hatton to have too much for him, but it would be a great fight.
But if TOrres somehow makes the upset, you'll get the Cotto fans saying this fight just proves further more how good Cotto is.
Looks like he'll fight Torres or Rees. Not bad, it's start if he wants to clean the 140 division, but the real tests are Malignaggi and Witter.
