I was browsing through some old boxing news archives, and noticed that Byron Mitchell had declared a comeback in the summer of last year. So I went to boxrec to see how he ended up doing. His first opponent was the beyond shot, former WBA interim champion, Richard Hall. Unfortunately, Hall still had enough left in the tank to knock Mitchell out in 4 action-packed rounds (Mitchell was down twice). Here is a good summary of the fight: http://www.boxingXXXscene.com/?m=show&id=11326 (take out the XXX) Hall is of course a former Dariusz Michalczewski victim, while Mitchell is most famous for losing to Joe Calzaghe. I had no idea how I missed this fight, so I dl'ed it. Surprisingly good scrap. I always enjoyed watching Hall fight back in the day (he had that 96% KO ratio for a reason).
For those interested, Hall officially retired (for the third time) after the fight. Let's hope he stays retired this time. Mitchell meanwhile has taken almost a whole year off, but plans to continue his comeback with a bout against Ettienne Whitaker next month.
Hall look garbage against Roy...and not cos Roy made him look garbage. He was afraid o throw punches, possibly afriad to get hit via counters but then why box if you refuse to punch?
Hall was a big puncher, but he could not deal with someone as fast as Roy (nobody could back then). To make things worse, that was the fight in which Jones tested positive. Hall was good against any boxer who was not a pure slickster.
Hall was a pretty hard man. Big puncher and seemed to show a good chin, which he showed in the DM, Letterlough, Roy and Johnson fights. Not quite sure what happened in the Hoye fight but was certainly on the way out by then.
I think after back to back wars with Michalczewski, and then taking Letterlough's (RIP) best, he was never the same.
Yes both men tested positive. Hall didn't need to bulk up though, he was 6'3 with a 78" reach, completely filled out at the weight. I don't see how it benefitted him much. Roy meanwhile was an average size SMW, i can understand why he would juice up against big fighters, such as Richard Hall and Virgil Hill.
Hall fought Letterlough on ESPN I believe. I remember watching it live on tv. Nothing like two huge punchers going at it.
Yes he was, good call: http://www.boxinginsider.com/headlines/pavlik-hopkins-conference-call-transcript/ Gotta love Loew's reasoning. "He looks just like Bernard." atsch
