I've heard people often repeat Lou Duva's claim that they were concerned with Richard Steele handling the first J.C. Chavez-Meldrick Taylor fight because of how Steele handled things with Don King fighters.

What exactly, however, is this history? The bad stoppage in Mike Tyson-Razor Ruddock was a year after the first Chavez-Taylor fight. Steele also took 2 points away from Chavez in the first fight with Frankie Randall (Chavez ended up losing the fight by 1 point on the official cards), was rather generous to Taylor's low blows or borderline low blows on Chavez, and took away a point from Felix Trinidad rather quick against Yori Boy Campas.

You can argue how he didn't warn Mike Tyson when he dropped Frank Bruno and hit him when he was down, then again, referees for some reason often tend to not penalize or even warn fighters when they do this (unless the guy starts acting a la Montell Griffin). Steele also let Bruno get away with a ton of rabbit punches before finally doing something about it.

Where is this history of Steele favoring King fighters?
