    Richard Torrez Jr: 6'1, 225lb

    Rocky Marciano: 5'11, 190lb

Torrez would be a large heavyweight in those days. His skillset would also be amongst the best due to evolution. How would he fair against a prime Marciano

Who has Torrez beat who is even remotely close to the level of someone like Rex Layne?

Torrez Jr. is very strong and has a lot of potential, but it’s too early to be comparing him to former champions.

You're not calling it evolution when his oppositions weren't up to par, come back here when Torrez KO's Kabayel or whatever.

Boxing has evolved downward. Bad argument.

Look i wouldn't count Torrez Jr out. \

But large size differences can be overcome. Michael Hunter, at 213 lbs, beat Martin Bakole who was 256 lbs. That's a 43 lb weight difference.

Marciano isn't a small man. Maybe in terms of reach but he was very stocky and powerful. While his chin was not tested vs big hitting 210 + lb guys, he was enormously powerful.

I think you simply have to favour a atg like Rocky over a completely unproven contender like Torrez Jr.

Head to head? I would certainly pick Vianello over Layne,

Among Torrez's opponents that I've seen on video, I'd pick Vianello, Dawejko and Moore to beat Layne. I haven't seen Curtis Harper fight, but he has performed well against some good opponents. I have seen Layne on video, calling him unimpressive is being tactful.

Layne looks basic on film. He wasn't fast, he wasn't strong, he wasn't super skilled, he wasn't big. He was tough. Being slow, weak, basic, small and tough is not a winning combination against modern opponents.

I will give the dude a lot of credit for walking through fire but I just don't see more there.

Imagine thinking a guy who beat Satterfield who beat excellent boxers in Harold Johnson, Cleveland Williams, Bob Baker, Nino Valdez or beating Jersey Joe and Ezzard Charles w their boxing records, or Turkey Thompson w his record. And being told he couldn’t compete w amateurs who look awful on film. Layne was not flashy and at times late in his career he looked bad. But when you watch him versus JJW and here you see a fighter w an excellent one two who’s got a tough chin and decent strength. Terrible defense though but he makes up for it w other atttibutes.

Dempsey ditched being Layne's consultant because he was weak and wouldn't train hard enough. And yes, he was slow. No snap. No twitch. No swivel.
