Since there seems to be an influx of sudden interest in Rickson Gracie, I thought I would post links to the documentary of Rickson's journey back to Japan to defend his championship in another MMA tournament. Rickson Gracie was a pioneer of the sport, and his work along with that of his brothers helped give birth to the rise of MMA and the UFC in America and the world. Whether or not you are a fan of the Gracies - perhaps you will find some philosphy in this video that you can carry into your training, fighting, and everday life. Please take the flaming elsewhere. Let the videos speak for themselves. Thank you. Very good documentary!:good Sure.....the playing field woulda been much tougher and more even if Rickson had fought a decade later than he did. But you cannot deny that A. He was a TRUE pioneer of the sport (Much more than Royce) and B. Rickson showed no weaknesses that we know of (Royce did) If not for this guy......MMA might not be the sport it is today.
Thanks alot for posting this! Never'd seen it completely. All i have to say is, if only Rickson was ten years younger :-( Still he could've performed in the UFC but at the time it was just as popular in the US as the Vale Tudo was in japan, and of course Royce was taking care of business there. Still though, he's pure legend, and looks to be the most athletically gifted of the Gracie family.
Ive got the choke dvd at home, have had for a few yrs, its very good. Even tho we never got to see Rickson vs true elite fighters we know he was very good because we seen Royce, Renzo & co compete quite well vs the good fighters & even tho they didnt always win, they usually held their own & we all know that without question Rickson was the best fighter in the entire gracie famly, thats undisputable. I think he`d do well today if he were younger because not only did he have the best BJJ of all the gracies but he actually was a superb wrestler too, he understood the importance of getting that vital top position in street or MMA fights. In all his yrs of rolling, he has never been submitted since he got his black belt at age 18. Even to this very day I havent seen a fighter that Id make favourite to beat Rickson in a submission grappling match & I include guys like BJ Penn - now that Id pay to see, as a guy who does BJJ myself, that would be fascinating. Rickson Gracie might very well be the best submission specialist the world has known - if there was any way of proving it, I wouldnt bet against it.
Dude - there's a whole forum out there. Please go start a post and say anything you want. If you actually have a point go make it right now the only point you have is on the top of your head.
I always read that their older brother, the one killed in the accident was the family's best fighter. what was his name, rolls I think.
Royce was the one out there showing people the sport; more people, and earlier on a big stage. Rickson did fight Zulu in 84, but there had been vale tudo fights in Brazil since at least the 20's; but Royce was the one who showed BJJ to the world outside of Brazil before Rickson. I won't bicker in this thread though, because its about Rickson and "Choke" Rolls is often thought of as the most open minded, and was selected by a landslide as the best BJJ fighter during the 70's. He did not just study BJJ, he openly looked elsewhere; He took up wrestling, judo, and sambo, winning AAU and YMCA Sambo championships. He also boxed some. He is best known as the guy who improved the takedowns and leglocks, especially the takedowns, in BJJ through his study in Sambo and Wrestling. But again, I'll try to keep the thread on topic.
Thanks for bringing up Rolls, Beebs. He was the innovator of the family and the man that helped Rickson mature his jiujitsu technique. There eventually came a point when Rolls could no longer submit Rickson and it wasn't long after that that Rickson became the champion of the Gracie family. If Rolls hadn't passed - it is interesting to think of how he might have influenced the family once jiujitsu became popular in America. The Gracie's popularity in America is what lead to their eventual downfall as the brother broke into separate factions instead of training with each other as they always had. Where Royce had trained for his first four UFC appearances with Rickson, Royler and Relson - he broke away and only trained with his own students at later stages of his career. Relson was merciless on Royce in training. In preparation for UFC 4 - Royce was not defending headbutts properly - so Relson headbutted Royce resulting in the black eye that Royce carried with him to the ring.
To be fair, amhlilhaus brought him up. As far as what would have been, I think Carlson took up where Rolls left off more or less. There are two major branches in the gracie family, and more importantly two trains of thought, they break down further and further with each group, but the two groups are the helio group and the Carlos group. Now I am going to generalize, but here is my best understanding Of the Helio group game the more methodical, self defense, technical side with fighters like Royce, Rickson and Royler, that style. The Carlos side became the more aggresive, top game, vale tudo style with fighters like Carlson, and Carlson Jr, Rolls, Renzo, Ryan, and Ralph. Another generalization, but basically if they are more "graceful", ala Rickson they are of the Helio style, and if they are more "warrior" ala Renzo and Ryan, they are of the Carlos/Carlson side. The one exception I can think of is Roger, he fights more like a Helio type in my eyes, despite being the son of Rolls, who was on the Carlson side. The two sides don't neccesarily always get along. There is also the Rorian side, who made all the money, but is actually part of the Helio side. You can usually tell the difference by the schools name if it is "academy" it is usually, not always, a Helio style, if it is Barra or something like that, it is usually a Carlson style. Most Gracies have their own personal "family" of gyms and have their names in the title. And since we have gotten a little of topic, sorry, I would take Renzo over Rickson, and Royce at least even odds in MMA. Royce was not the wet behind the ears weakling he was made out to be. Royce and especially Renzo exemplify the "fight anybody, anywhere, any time" attitude, and will go out there and prove himself time and time again.
The Carlson side brought more fighters to prominence...Sperry, Busta, Bitetti, Conan, Vitor, Goes..Wallid who choked Royce the **** out...that are non Gracies.. What does this tell you?? Well look at Renzo ...they are great teachers who holds nothing back..no secrets...unfortunately not all Gracies understood this concept of teaching Lets talk about Rickson..his BJJ is one of the best ever ..no doubt..this coming from BBJ Black belts who have trained under Carlson and then him..But in todays MMA and his subpar stand up game..Frankly he will get Koed much like Royler has been Koed..Note that Royler was one of the truly great BJJ competitors in the family, very technical..and looked what happened to him when guys caught up. Rickson didnt have a monster takedown..just think of him against a GSP ..He aint taking GSP down..he'll get beaten up bad...He'll have a hellish time against BJ..just ask Renzo who BJ dominated
