ricky burns 10 world title fights

    i saw in the lightweight thread people going on about ricky having not faced 1 world class fighter during his 10 fights and thought i would look into it and see what my thoughts were on the opposition. feel free to break it down in your own way but i dont want this to turn into a slanging match against ricky or billy!!

    lets have a look at rickys 10 world title fights:

    roman martinez: this was a terrific win against the number 1 in the division at the time, it was a weak division but if you beat the number 1 you deserve credit!! maybe crude defo world class

    andreas evenson: this was an easy first defence against someone who didnt really deserve it but i have seen worse 1st defences. wouldnt win a british title if he was british imo more like area level

    joseph laryea: this fight was never meant to happen!! paul appleby messed up his eliminator against laryea in a fight that was hand picked to get an all scottish clash!! well done paul because if you hadnt messed up we would have seen a better bout and ricky would have got more credit for this defence. laryea would struggle to win a domestic title and couldnt even win the commonwealth belt.

    nicky cook: another one that should never have happened but ricky cant be blamed for that, the fact nicky beat former ricky burns conquerer alex arthur made it sound a good match, the injury only stopped nicky from getting a beating imo and nicky was probably decent euro level but just below world level.

    michael katsidis: katsidis was a very exciting but limited fighter and by the time he got to ricky he was shopworn. he had his best day against jmm, he showed heart, courage and was a gallant loser but that fight finish the katsidis that we all loved. nothing can be taken away from ricky because before the fight no one knew what the jmm fight had taken out of him. hewas never world level but was defo european level

    paulus moses: was an ex world champ that went to japan adn won the wba belt so this was a good fight and moses was defo world level.

    kevin mitchell: was a great domestic dust up and had teh country split but on that night risky was awesome and wiped out kevin mitchell. kev might have 1 last tilt if he gets a rematch with linares but i fear that he will prove to never be world level but a very good euro level fighter.

    jose gonzales: what a comeback for ricky, nobody knew who gonzales was before the fight but anyone who watched that night could see he had world class skills but at he same time he proved that he didnt have the heart to match his skills. imo a very good win for ricky but also the beginning of the end of his confidence. gonzales would have picked up a british and possibly euro title depending on how tough mentally the opponent was. waste of talent imo

    ray beltran: before we go any further ricky deserves so much credit for actually finishing the fight (imo this might have been the reason he has fallen from the top so quickly and looks scared to be hit.)but i dont buy the whole if ricky didnt get a broken jaw he would have wiped him out because its a contact sport and the jaw break was caused by a legitimate punch. ricky was lucky not to have actually been beat that night but when at home and as the champion these things happen all over the world. ray has since won a world title fight but failed a drugs test and the weigh in!! imo beltran is euro level at best! and a cheat!!

    terence crawford: what a fighter and im sure everyone including billy would agree that terence would have beat ricky at any stage of his career!! the guy is on a different planet comapred to ricky and i fancy him to win titles at 3-4 weight and be in some tremendous fights. world class and imo could end up elite!!!

    so only imo remember ricky faced 3 world level opponents, 5 euro level opponents and 3 that would struggle at british domestic level. there has been much worse runs that champions have been on all over the world and i think that ricky gets bad press because of peoples hate for billy on here! we all know he can come away with a c racker ike rickys hands are faster than khans but ricky had a great run and made the most of his abilities.

    how do you see the 10 fights and the level of the opponents

    Not exactly the 'murderers row' that most on here make it out to be.

    Broner, Gamboa, JMM - He missed ALL of these guys (for whatever reason).

    Would he have beat them? Easy! He'd do it with one arm! - Billy Nelson. In reality? No way.

    Beltran's claim to fame is that he is Manny Pac's sparring partner (and Ricky got pushed to the brink in that one).

    Mitchell was a good domestic win. I rate Kevin, but he just can't produce it on the world stage.

    Kats was a very good win. I thought Mike would overwhelm him. But Coyle's finish of him was MUCH better.

    Martinez was a great win. He came back tremendously, but he looked on the way to getting stopped.

    To me, Ricky is an overachiever. Simple. As soon as he faced the upper UPPER echelon, he got found wanting... badly, too.

    If you had to TEACH someone the SKILLS of Boxing, would you model your guy on him? Clearly not (same goes for Froch - technically terrible). But if you had to tell someone that could do it with limited skills, a heart of a lion and a ton of determination and hard work? Without doubt.

    Great kid, entertaining as hell. But Billy winds me up with how biased he is towards him. You just cannot think that he'd beat everyone, as it's a lie.

    A very average fighter managed well.

    His best attribute is his chin , kept him upright which allowed him to last the distance and thus retain dubiously on points.

    The best folk to ask how good Ricky was were some of his sparring partners ie Mitchell, Gethins, Coyle,Campbell, Selby, Mathews I'm sure they a tell you the same thing

    Sparring and boxing are too different things come on Billy you know that better than anyone.

    If you just had a total lesson with sparring gloves and headguards on, how would you cope with 8oz gloves and no headguards?
    The answer is you wouldn't!

    but the conditions of fight night are completely different to fight night, then that of a weekday morning in a gymnasium a host of other things come into play?

    I know this and I have never set foot in a professional ring?

    Sparring is very very subjective.

    It like the practice range at the open, they all hit it straight on the range, but its very different on the course.:good

    Exactly there are guys who are amazing gym fighters who cant do anything in the ring.

    Tyrone Nurse looks like a world beater in the gym.

    George Groves for example looks terrible in sparring but puts it together on fight night

    You are like a broken record.

    If Ricky was so awesome in sparring, how come he got his jaw shattered by Beltran and failed to lay a glove on Crawford?

    You say this, but if Ricky pulled a muscle etc on fight night or the day before the fight you'd soon change your tune about if he didn't perform.

    Can't win.
