I assume we're operating under the assumption that in these hypothetical match-ups that the fighters in question are as good as there last fights? So for instance Marquez is the same fighter as the one that fought Katsidis and took out Ramos last time, rather than what will probably be a ruined Dinamita courtesy of his pesky Filipino nemesis.

If that's the case then I wouldn't even delve into the thought of Marquez, Rios, and Guerrero. Burns has shown himself to be probably a world class lightweight(maybe another top level fight will secure that, but I'd put him in that bracket if people have put Vazquez there), whereas the aforementioned three have shown themselves to be world class fighters in general. Although he clearly warranted the win, Katsidis did push him relatively close, and we're talking about two guys who have already battered Mikey here and another who would, it's too early to say in his 135lbs tenure that he'd fare very well here.

He'd unquestionably beat this Acosta, who is broken beyond repair. The Abril fight was possibly the most heartbreaking I'll have to endure this year, everything he once had has completely diminished, and I actually wouldn't be surprised if Burns stopped him. His balance is non-existent, and his punch resistance has vapourised. There wouldn't even be any point in Burns fighting him, it would have zero merit. A prime Aguacerito squashes him though, at both 130lbs and 135lbs, in his prime he ha almost everything, such a complete fighter.

I think he'd beat DeMarco, who can't deal with any kind of sustained movement. He's not a pressuring type like Katsidis, he's a rather basic, stiff, straight-up fighter who likes, needs his opponent to stand in front of him in order to win. It's why he managed to overcome the deficit and beat Linares, after getting boxed to a standstill, as soon as Linares tired and stood his ground he was able to take him out. I can't imagine Ricky would tire out to the dangerous extent Linares did, and I think he be economical enough to not punch himself out either. It sounds a simple and basic gameplan, but realistically if you have all the tools that's all that's required to beat Tony, circle, move in and out and mix your punches without wearing yourself out and he won't find you.

Linares is a tough one. I don't rate Jorge, but he has one of those styles that'll frustrate Burns, one of those flashy and fast kind of guys that'll steal rounds with style over substance in his combinations. He'll linger outside and then bounce in to string together some pretty and ineffective punches before moving out and not getting caught. What you have to rely on against him is either A) being able to swarm him completely, exposing his defensive flaws and not giving him room to get his own punches off, a fighter which Burns isn't, or B) carrying a big enough dig to wipe him out in the late going. Despite the fact Linares is chinny, does Ricky actually have the power to take advantage? Burns is a bit of a less powerful, much more mobile and defensively able DeMarco for me, and despite being a better fighter all-round than the Venezuelan I think he'd probably lose a tight decision simply because Linares is an annoying proposition for him.

I don't see why he couldn't decision Antillon, who is possibly the worst fighter in the sport at protecting himself. I've never seen someone eat uppercuts as much as this guy does. If Burns could beat Katsidis - even if it was a past best Mike - he can beat Antillon, who is essentially a watered down version. He'll trundle forward, eat punches, and hit arms and thin air. He can't close space down as quick as Katsidis and doesn't hit as hard, Burns might have a hairy moment here and there when Urbano gives one of those really spirited bursts, but he'd likely win an 8-4 kind of decision, the kind of fight Antillon will come accustomed to soon enough considering the magnitude of the beatings he's sustained in only 3 defeats.

Mitchell is an interesting one, an intriguing stylistic clash anyways. At twenty past four in the morning I'm not going into it though.:yep Kevin seems to have trouble with guys who will pressure him more than anyone else though, with his shoddy footwork and tendency to back straight to the ropes, that said Burns has size on him, and would probably force Mitchell to be the aggressor, something I've never necessarily seen him comfortable in doing. Mitchell seems the type who prefers mid-range fights or a guy who'll plod at him though, neither of which Burns will do that often, certainly not the letter anyways, and even if the former transpires he wields a superior jab and is more composed in utilising it. At long-range I'm not certain how adept Mitchell is at closing the ring off and teeing off before the other guy escapes, really is a question of who can impose their style. I dunno, Burns I suppose.

On Saturday i saw Burns outbox an elite level fighter, a proven world class operator.

He will easily beat Mitchell, and if u think mitchell stops ricky then your mad

 

I am a huge Katsidis fan but he has never been world class, only fringe and is past his best.

 

Some stupid **** getting said here. Ricky Burns has earned the right to be in with these guys. He is well capable of fighting the best in the division and winning. He outclassed both Katsidis and martinez, two fighters people thought were world class. If ricky fights another top lightweight and wins then we will still hear bull**** excuses.

This the same guy that had a war and dropped JMM like a bad habit, lost SD to jaun diaz, lost on cuts to casamayor whilst ahead on points and then made Kevin Mitchell do a dance?

 

Mitchell and DeMarco I think he beats.

Rios Stops him,
Linares UD him,
He has a chance with everyone else on that list imo.

Em, you mean lost by around 4 points to Juan Diaz only for one moronic judge to somehow score the fight to him. Diaz had far too much quality for Katsidis, because he really was an A-class fighter. And he didn't lose on points to Casamayor, he got caught BIG and stopped late on.

Look at this place nowadays, the biggest characters hardly even talk pure boxing in their posts anymore, & to think you mocked me for not getting all deep, the neglect of this well thought out post of yours should tell you why guys like me dont get crazy deep anymore. Take from my post what you will Jpab, positive OR negative, I dont mind, its alright.
