First things first i am no Burns fan, even as a champion i didnt rate him highly ...But when i started thinking about it ,it is amazing he is still fighting after the class boxers he has been in with...he has steel balls He has been in with top class fighters for years, maybe 6 years?.. Crawford and Indongo fight for all the belts soon, both spanked Burns but this is the class of boxer he has been in with.. Hopefully he has enough Bucky money for life
How can you fault a 3 weight world champion? Not saying he is the best etc but 3 weight champ none the less, when he did lose it was against top class opponents. Man did the best, of not more with what he had, can only respect that.
If there's any British boxer who deserves fans' respect and admiration, it's Ricky Burns. Achieved all the great things in his career through sheer grit and determination. The paragon of prizefighting.
He overachieved in the sport based on ability, the work required to do that is unreal, the man has my total respect. A great example to all young boxers that hard work pays off
The best Skipper in boxing - particularly when he skipped the night away losing every round to Indongo. I waited all my life for for this unification fight And couldn't wait to get in there on Sat night Round and round the ring he goes Will he throw a punch, nobody knows The full 12 rounds came and went It was obvious from round 1, Burns was spent The arena was full of deflated Jocks They all knew Burns took them for a pile of cox The end of the fight the realisation dawned Burns sucked them all in and all had been conned
Its been well documented on here by Billy that Burns struggles with southpaws. In Indongo he drew the epitomy of the rangy spaw boxer. I dont think it was a case of Burns was spent, the result would of been the same no matter which point in Burns career hed of faced the indongo style. I remember burns getting beat by johannson. I was at the fight that night. At that point most people wouldnt of sided with Burns picking up a British. Ricky has had a fantastic career
Sadly a boxer is usually the last one to know their days are numbered or they are shot. Burns is in this category. However no one can say the man does not deserve respect for his career.
Burns should have retired after the Beltran fight as that fight finished him and he was absolutely gone when he left the trainer who actually turned a mediocre fighter into a World Champion. If it was not for Fish rogering his finances then he would have retired with a cracking record. Now he is losing respect rapidly by fleecing his fans. His last fight, he made pre fight comments such as 'cannot wait to get in there on Sat' then skipped away all fight, losing every round with clearly no intention of winning.
His dragging out of his career is damaging his legacy, imo. His achievements deserve respect no doubt but as far as 3 weight world champions go, he's certainly a weaker one. I hope Ricky calls it a day soon
Burns is a complete gentleman and a great example of how to fulfil your potential. Not the most naturally skilled of boxers but he learned to provide a potent mix of the skills he had plus toughness and guile. I do think he's had too many wars though and i'd like to see him call it a day. I really don't want to see him in with Josh Taylor or even Crolla now.
He deserves massive credit for a great career I remember when he was operating at British level and got beat by Carl Johanneson I would never of thought then that he would go on to be a 3 weight world champion. Some great wins notably against Martinez, prime Mitchell and Katsidis at the time. I don't think he'll be remembered anywhere near as well as he could have been though unfortunately. I feel like he's just fighting for money now and each loss and bad performance is just damaging the legacy he's built.
