I'm happy for Ricky as he fought his heart out to get the decision. The problem with him is his lack of power and decidedly average chin. Malignaggi has featherfists as well but he is quick of hand and feet plus sports a terrific chin. Perhaps if Burns avoids big punchers for a while he may be ok but if not he could end up like Bernard Dunne.
He's a pretty tall guy so maybe moving up to 135 will help him take shots better although it wouldn't do his punching power any favors.
Awesome fight. Honestly thought Martinez was going to knock him out. Even when burns was dominating the first round I thought he was to open and Martinez would catch him sooner or later. Then immediately he was on his arse from a Martinez right hand which didn't actually land 100% cleanly. In the end I thought the scorecards were harsh on Ricky Burns, had it 116-111, and had he not been knocked down in the first it'd have been 118-110.
Great fight, Fight of the Year so far for me. Props to Burns, great courage, heart and determination pulled him through. well done to Martinez as well for making it a great fight and im sure we'll be seeing this guy again. I hope theres a rematch.
Great fight, both guys put in a good shift at the office! Martinez didn't get schooled, more outworked. It was a back and forth fight, and Martinez could have finished Ricky at times. The same could be said for Burns, he dug in and came on strong in the last couple of rounds too. Fantastic fight. A rematch would be great! would love to see that again.
I was there and thoroughly enjyojed it - a great night. Burns was terrific - his body-punching and uppercuts were better than ever. I thought he showed he has a pretty good chin and stamina too. Great effort from both guys and there was a great atmosphere too.
I had it wider than those scorecards although Martinez showed a lot of balls to keep Burns active.:good
