http://garyreilly.blogspot.com/2008/10/ricky-burns-there-is-only-one-fight-i.html this may intrest some of you ,done it on thursday night. njoy:good
i do .i think burns is a decent fighter,as i mentioned in the article he has chnged to billy nelson (who trains willie limond, kenny anderson and jason hastie) and he can only get better.
Kev Mitchell? Im shocked! I thought the Rickster would be after Nicky Cook first & foremost. As for him moving to Nelson, I can see the difference in Ricky already. His punches arent as fat as they were a couple of years ago, his stright punches & body punching has improved dramatically. However, I believe Nelson encourages the Rickster to be a bit too 'gung go' at times, Ricky has a great jab, & he should be encouraged to use it as much as possible. Dangerous fight for the Rickster coming up next, & I'll be honest here, Im worried about it.
I would much rather see Burns defend against Gomez first, then go after Mitchell. Surely this route would give Burns a bigger payday?
Got to disagree, he's become easier to hit and moves back in straight lines and forgotten how to use the ring. Appart from that I don't think hes got any worse but appart from the arthur fight where Arthur made burns look limited at times, his punches haven't got any better. Do u not remember the Johanneson fight where Ricky was ramming in body shots left right and centre? He wasn't working the body much in the last fight. Don't see where ur coming from at all even though you'll probably see me as bias.
Of course you are biased younk Mik, old Rab is like a father figure to you guys. Strangely enough, I felt bad for old Rab when Burns picked up his title, I thought the old guy would have a wee tear in his eye. i was happy for Burns, but i spared a thought for the guy who made it all posiible in the first place. However, unlike you mik I have no emotional ties, Im just stating my opinion. & my opinion is, that Ricky was good, but a change has helped him. Like I said to you ages ago, sometimes boxers can go stale, & need a wee change to keep them on the up & up. The Johaneson fight was a disaster. Burns did everything wrong in that fight. However, IMO hes honed his skills & now we are seeing the benefits. His body punching was effective in his last fight, but like I said earlier he was throwing fat punches all night long against Johaneson. Thats why he was wailing away with wide bodyshots that were doing nothing to tame Carl. In his last fight though, the bodyshots worked IMO. They tired his opponent. The straight shots were thrown with more venom, & Burns looked like stopping a very dangerous opponent in the 12th. Im happy with Burns progress, thats all Im saying. Thats were Im coming from. I was worried a while back, but I can see it coming together now!
Mitchell would destroy Burns. If you can be SCHOOLED by Carl Johanneson you won't get anywhere. Carl is a very good, brave fighter with plenty of power, but isn't a boxer by any means.
I wouldn't judge burns by the Johanneson fight. He had a bad night that night and boxed the wrong fight but is capable of beating Johanneson in my opinion. Did u not see when every time Burns put the jabs togeather and moved against him Carl had nothing. Anyway it's not as if Mitchell had an easy ride against Carl.
He did, but Johanneson stopped him from getting his punches off effectively and in the end Burns had no answer. I agree about the Mitchell fight though - and would go as far as to say that Carl was one punch away from the big KO, it could be said that Mitchell got a bit of a favour off the referee by...... 1. Being allowed to continue 2. The stoppage on Johanneson That said, he showed plenty of heart for the battle and a decent chin - he was blocking punches with his face pretty effectively from rd 3 onwards.
