He has well over achieved. Time to step a side and let super hunk Josh Kelly take over.

He had a few decent wins - Martinez, Mitchell and to a lesser extent Cook and a faded Katsidis so shouldn't be mugged off the way he is on here.

He has had some very favourable decisions and matchmaking though. I mean a three weight world champion? Really? How the **** did that happen?

Burns has never been the best but there is no way he or his team watched a video of indongo. Indongo springs so much from range he could easily have slipped to the right and caught him coming in. A crafty fighter light crawford would destory him imo. He could even slip towards his left to be honest.

Burns just looked unprepared to me bevause indongo has huge flaws to expose

Tbf its a bit like eddie hearns doesnt like ricky. His matchmakings been all over the place since he got him from frank. Frank had a bit of career progression with ricky whereas as soon as hearns got him its a bit like lets stick him in with as many awkward opponents as we can find. In between fighting guys that were pretty hopeless that didnt put him any further forward in his career. In that time hes fought...gonzales. beltran. Crawford. Zlaticanin. Figeoero away from home who was massive at the weight. And indongo doesnt take a rocket science to work out hed be a nitemare for burns. Plus a bit skeptical of hearns deal they signed for the fight where hes ended up with the promotional rights for indongos next fight...did he throw ricky to the wolves for it. Probably not but does make you wonder. Even in rickys best days...he was always a limited fighter but one that made the very best of himself...everyone knew that. Turned into a half decent fighter. Could have gave him a good career finish by sticking him in with the right type of opponents...working towards a big fight getting paid handsomely along the way.

But its a case of sticking him in with guys thats a nitemare for him. His old trainer billys been on here saying keep ricky away from southpaws. Eddie goes out and finds the most awkward he can find. Its mindboggling. I just dont think he figured in eddies long term plans. Eddie didnt really have much scottish talent for a while it was a case of putting ricky on down in england...where he probably didnt put many tickets on the bill. He kind of became dispensible.

Looking back it was madness he left frank. His careers went no where really since. Dont think hes had a good win under hearn. Gonzales...but no sure how good it was bearing in mind he got battered for most of it before gonzales pulled up with an injury i think it was.

I think that's a bit harsh on Hearn. Burns had to fight Crawford so that was unavoidable. Yeah you could argue Beltran and Zlaticanin were bad match-making but you need to feed decent names to the fans. Figueroa was actually good match-making in hindsight because Burns came away looking great, fought well against an overweight opponent and put on a good fight stateside. Did well for his profile. Di Rocco for the vacant belt was a masterstroke from Hearn because Di Rocco was awful. Relikh was a bit of an own goal for Hearn because nobody knew who he was an he arguably beat Ricky. And Indongo was well played from Hearn because he was being chased by every promoter with a LWW because he was seen as easy pickings.

In hindsight yeah he probably shouldn't have left Frank like he did because it bankrupted him. But I think Eddie has done well with a limited fighter who isn't even a true 140lber. If Burns is matched against Crolla next it will be great matchmaking again IMO because it's winnable, it will make money (Eng v Sco) and the fans will lap it up.

What? FW matchmaking is as shite as any promoter when it suits his pocket, simple. It's s business not a crèche.

I'm sorry but that is one of the worst statements i have heard from a trainer lol, wasn't it billys job when he coached him for his world title fights to ensure he was prepared to fight southpaws? i can never remember ricky struggling with them as an amateur so maybe it is more to do with billys repetitive training in the gym?:thinking:

billy was peter harrison second in command for a lot of years and with what i have been told they both preach exactly the same regime 'left on left' this means that after punching they always want your left shoulder level with your opponents shoulder but against southpaws this makes you walk onto the left hand. go back and watch ricky since he started training with billy and you will see after he punches he automatically moves slightly to his right to get his left shoulder level with his opponents. have seen this when peter was the youth performance director for amateur boxing scotland and it stuck in my mind that it makes you very one dimensional. this is made even more apparent now that ricky isn't as confident and mentally strong as he was before the beltran fight when he got his jaw broken so instead of trying to grind results out like before he now goes into auto pilot and to what he did with billy everyday in the gym and that is left on left or moving around the ring with no real direction.:eusa_doh:

tony sims gets a lot of stick but imo he was a busted flush before he ever got there and although i don't really think he is a great coach but i just feel you could have gave ricky to adam booth, freddie roach or virgil hunter and they couldn't change rickys form.

at the end of the day ricky has been amazing for scotland and when he was with billy and being matched by frank he really achieved more than anyone thought after a couple early defeats but ince his move to matchroom i feel he has just been matched at the level we all believed he was at with frank and he has struggled. no shame in what he has done and he is the most successful scottish boxer ever although i would argue that ken buchanan is still the main man:thumbsup:

Styles makes fights, Indongo was all wrong for Ricky, whether he is shop worn or not.

Burns has been a credit to Scottish and British boxing, I believe every knowledgeable boxing person would acknowledge that.

His heart, chin and stamina combined with a basic set of tools have taken him a long way.

So much respect for a proper fighting man.
