I watched both Johansson fights and Carl completely dominated Ricky, Ricky was just a boy back then.

The Mitchell fight was a barnburner! Mitchell defensively under Cook was atrocious and he nearly paid the price. It was a gutcheck for Kevin a young lad back then as well.

I'm gonna sit back and watch recent fights of both men. Interesting debate.

Yes there is but Ricky's body is conditioned brilliantly and Kevin would need to put money in the bank from early and would have to work into mid-short range to land to body with any real effect.

I'll rewatch Kevin's bodywork against Murray.

I think it's an excellent match-up and a fight that will be good to guage where both are at.

No-one can argue about how he has turned his career around.

What can be argued is the level of opposition since he won his title.

However for me at least this fight will answer any remaining questions I have.

I favour Burns but this is not by any means a mismatch, i think as long as Burns doesnt overcommit which he doesnt he can win an 8 - 4 kind of decision.

Rewatched Murray and Katsidis fights, Mitchell does box well at times but the Katsidis fight sums him up defensively. He doesn't concentrate he was asked 3x by corner during and inbetween rounds to get off ropes and also hold right higher. He didn't! and it cost him.

Katsidis was sharp that night, but i was there and felt i saw a rabbit in headlights. Well watching it back i gotta give Mitchell his dues he boxed pretty well for first 2 rounds. He made a few mistakes but landed some good shots and kept range decently but it's the 3rd round he gets ambushed right at the start of round and falls apart.

I personally don't believe it was issues before fight and that repeat for me has confirmed it. He boxed well or to a similar level to his other bouts till he was hit hard and clean and he went to bits.

Against Murray i was shocked at how many lead right hands he ate, Murray not the most crispest of punchers. Vano i saw the bodywork you mentioned and he did pay the body in full and it worked.

I'd be really intrigued to see how Mitchell tries fight/box Burns, i'd also wonder if Ricky would look to apply pressure or just box at range.

    Good stuff mate!

As for the Burns - Mitchell fight, I honestly don't think Burns has the power to trouble him. Mitchell after all has a half decent chin should his defence let him down.

Mitchell has good speed, good power, throws his punches together well, has a spiteful jab, and has shown discipline working with Tibbs.

Kevin's hardest fights to date where he was given the most trouble (Katsidis, Mitchell and Johannesson) were against come forward aggressive guys with good power. Burns on the other hand is much more of a technician. How many guys have outboxed Mitchell before? He may be susceptible to being overwhelmed (which is why Rios beats him handily), but I'm not sure many in the division outbox Kev.

As for tactics, I'd like Mitchell to go on the front foot and force the pace, working Burns' body all the time. Stay well out of range of Burns' jab before coming in (Burns' best punch IMO), before working the left hook on the inside.

On occasion I'd like Mitchell to let Ricky lead to open up his defence, but I wouldn't make this the main tactic.
