Don't recall anyone doubting him, if anything Gonzalez was the one doubted.

Fair play to Burns for staying in there but lets not dodge the issue that for six rounds he was comprehensively outboxed.

That was a very strange fight. I knew nothing about Gonzalez going into it and assumed he would be an ordinary fighter with a superficially good record against limited opposition. Then the fight started and he looked world class like a proper top Puerto Rican boxer, landing at will power in both hands and making Ricky miss by miles.
I think you've got to credit Ricky with showing a lot of courage and hanging in there and not getting discouraged in what must have been a very frustrating night for him especially at home and in his first fight for a new promoter. The seventh round was the key where Ricky gave up trying to outbox and just stood there and went toe to toe with him and Gonzalez punched himself out.
I've got to say i cant understand why Gonzalez quit like that. He must have been miles ahead on the score cards. I thought he won the first 7 rounds. Even though Ricky won the eighth and ninth rounds he still wasnt catching Gonzalez cleanly. Gonzalez literally had 9 minutes to change his life and didnt take it.

That is exactly my point. I try to keep things civil rather than start prattling with someone on the internet and that's your first response.

    And you are mistaken.

Grow up, Rob. You can't make out you're a victim when you actively lower the tone of a debate.

That will never take away the fact a championship fight lasts 12 rounds

Ricky took just two round mate, he was very very lucky. Even you as his trainer must accept that, can you offer a plausible explanation as to why he was so poor?

Well i wouldn't call myself a doubter but i based my decision on Gonzalez winning by stoppage or points on what i'd seen of him and knew he'd outclass Ricky in every department which is what took place.

Gonzalez was clearly the better boxer and the best man lost this fight...it happens sometimes in boxing and i guess a wins a win for Ricky. I disagree about Burns taking away Gonzalez's heart, that would be true if Ricky actually landed anything in rounds 8 or 9 but having just re-watched those rounds there was nothing significant landed as Ricky was still coming up short with his punches.

I think the more likely scenario is that Gonzalez was genuinely injured and also gassed after round 7 and both things combined were too much for him mentally and physically to continue so he beat himself rather then anything Burns did although i do give Ricky massive credit for staying in the fight during the 7th round when a lesser man would have wilted. Shame though as if Gonzalez hadn't got injured or gassed he would have stopped Ricky, no doubt about it!

Like Jonsey said Burns proved he was a belt holder but not the number 1 of the Lightweight division. I wouldn't put even put him in the Top 3 either as Gamboa, Vasquez and Abril would comfortably beat him and Broner would annihilate him but he's a Welterweight now so that fight isn't in play now anyway. Burns has tremendous heart and stamina though so i wouldn't put it past him to prove people wrong if he ever faced any of those guys in the future but in terms of pure boxing ability and skills he's definately a level below the top 3 guys in the division. Even a guy like Tony Demarco would be a 50-50 fight for me so that's the guy he should target in september rather then Vasquez who would make for a boring fight anyway.

Nobody is disputing that and I fully expect everybody to keep peddling the "he broke his heart" stuff but it was painfully obvious that Gonzalez was a superior boxer.

That being said it's nice to have four British World champs.

    Good post.

All this 'spinning' post fight is just bull****. Gonzalez lost the fight rather then Burns doing anything to win it unless his gameplan was to allow Gonzalez to beat the **** out of him untill he broke his hand and was gassed.

Notice how there was no talk of a rematch from team Burns, they know next time they wouldn't be so lucky.
