When a guy is gassed and his legs are weak most normal punches feel 2 times harder especially while they are still trying to move around the ring with legs that are gone under constant pressure

He's not superior if I can't do it for 12 rounds though!

It's not as if Gonzalez simply decided to give Ricky a break and quit. He quit because he couldn't handle it. Ricky could. Hence he's the better man.

Gonzalez knew he couldn't get much off any more, he was tired out, he didn't like that he was starting to get hit (an issue Victor Ortiz has), and he didn't like that Ricky wasn't falling over.

All of that played a part. It was obvious in the 9th that he just didn't want any more.

Dave is right here. I just watched the fight back and Gonzalez blew his load. Injury might have been legit but he quite because he was ****ed.

I thought the main give away was his foot work went from very fluid and meaningful in the 6th to laboured and just to get away in the 8th.

If Gonsalez hadn't chased for the win and shot his load in round 7 he might well have made it to the cards and a narrow decision, but he miscalculated.

If the fight had continued and Burns had stopped the guy in a more acceptable, traditional, 'legitimate' manner, he wouldn't be having any of the grief. This has echos of TKO6: 'he was up on the cards'. It also revives all those arguments that fights are 12 rounds, not six, not seven, not any other number.

Yes, Burns being down so much and so clearly IS undoubtedly a cause for concern, but there MAY be mitigating factors. All we can do is wait and see how he performs next time.

Even if Burns had stopped him in 11-12 he still wouldn't get the credit the posts would be "Well he stopped him coz Gonzalez threw everything into the 7th after outboxing Ricky for 6 rounds" so stoppage or retirement Ricky was never getting any credit for last night but he showed heart and bollocks in there last night especially that 7th round and Gonzalez just quit when his man wasn't hitting the floor like a sack of ****.

At the end of the day you could say Ali didn't deserve the win agains foreman as he was hammered the whole fight! It was a twelve round fight had Ricky sparked him in the final 10 seconds of the twelfth round it would still have been a win. Ricky and billy will hopefully learn lessons and be the better for it. Burns came out for the last round Gonzalez didn't end of!

This is on the first page of a very long thread, but I have to respond to this, I rated Gonzalez before the fight and said I felt worried for Ricky in his behaviour coming into this fight especially after a six month lay off.

Having said all of that, to say Gonzalez is on another planet skillwise is basically bull****

Let's see if Gonzalez can truly apply his skill and not just become another wasted flash in the pan like Breidis Prescott

I think he's gonna be a very dangerous guy who will give a lot of so called "top tier fighters" a lot of troubles and he could even KO a few of them out cold, but if he gets dragged into deep waters, he drowns. Thats what I see when I look at Jose A Gonzalez

Just watched the fight as I'm away but it seemed that Gonzalez went in there with his tactics spot on. He knew burns at home was going to come looking for him and every time burns threw his jab he just took a little step back and either got out of the way or countered with his long reach. That was the key for him as everything pretty much that burns does comes off his jab and he just couldn't land it. He definitely shot his bolt in the seventh though and his legs looked very tired which was affecting him I think it was just exhaustion coupled with the wrist injury. He looked good but I think if there is anything we've learned about him from that fight its that his punch power is over rated but his skills are very under rated.

How do you see a rematch going? I don't imagine you'll be moving on to Vasquez/Abril/Broner before correcting some things...DeMarco and Rees would be great fights but a rematch is still the logical next step to prepare for a unification. Did you see any opportunities for Ricky to exploit in a rematch, or would more pressure starting earlier get the job done?
