Report: Ricky Hatton Going to Announce Return to the Ring

Former welterweight champion Ricky Hatton is reportedly on the cusp of announcing his return to boxing after being away from the ring for over three years, according to The Boxing Observer.

Hatton officially retired from boxing in July of 2011 but ended his career by going 2-2 in his last four bouts—his two losses came at the hands of the best boxers of the last decade, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, both ending in knockouts.

Although the only two losses of his 47-fight career were at the hands of Mayweather and Pacquiao, Hatton looked like a shell of his former self towards the end of his career and could be making a huge mistake by coming back to the ring.

Turning 34 on October 6th, ring rust from his three-year hiatus will surely come into play, as he won't be able to bounce back as quickly as say a 25-year-old could.

Hatton (45-2, 32 KO) is said to have been getting back into fighting shape over the past month and has his own boxing gym in Manchester, England that would make a return a real possibility.

The only bright spot in Hatton's potential comeback is that he has beaten everyone he has faced except the best-of-the-best, so it is possible for Hatton to be successful in the ring if he steers clear of both Mayweather and Pacquiao.

The report states that Hatton's return bout could be in November in the U.K., which would be a smart place to come back for Hatton—as the home town crowd could help Hatton be more comfortable in his return to the ring.

With rumors of a possible British star showdown in the making (per The Guardian), Hatton has been linked to rumors of a fight with fellow Brit and former world champ, Amir Khan.

Khan (26-3, 18 KO) is coming off of a shocking knockout loss to Danny Garcia in Las Vegas this past July and is looking for a big name to reinstate his name in the sport.

A possible Hatton-Khan showdown would be a huge draw in the U.K., as both fighters are huge stars in their native country. Both fighters have big enough names to draw major interest from fans worldwide as well, making a comeback for Hatton worth it for a fight with Khan alone.

Actually if Hatton can string together a few wins, he'll shake off some rust at which point I wouldn't mind seeing him fight Khan. Why not? It's not like Khan is a super elite.

Hatton has been on the slide since around 2009. Add to that his punch resistence appears to be gone and that he hasn't laced up gloves for 3 years and is well into his 30's.... I'm a massive fan of Hatton and would hate to see him come back and tarnish his legacy by losing to someone he would have spanked in his prime

i would not mine hatton back in the ring but i think he should be well matched. no khan or kell brook type of fighters. michael katsidis, marcos madiana or lucas matthysse. i think he needs to fight fighters like that, i want to see hatton win and not get beat up and koed.

2 Glass jawed chumps. I don't know what would be funnier. Khan stopping Ricky, or fatton destroying amir.

Hatton once said he wanted to rematch floyd mayweather.

Imagine, floyd v hatton part 2 in england in November. Nice tune up for floyd.

Ricky made so many mistakes inside and outside of the ring, he is too old to adjust.

I dont think I have ever seen a fighter look as bad in a superfight as he did against Manny.
