Ricky Hatton comeback set for approval by boxing officials

Former two-weight world champion Ricky Hatton's comeback has moved closer after he appeared before boxing officials to ask for his licence back.

Hatton, 33, attended a British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) meeting in Cardiff on Wednesday ahead of a planned news conference on Friday.

General secretary Robert Smith told BBC Sport: "His licence will be granted pending the completion of medicals.

"He spoke well, looks fit and he wants to have one more hurrah."

Hatton, nicknamed 'The Hitman', has not fought since suffering a second-round knockout by Manny Pacquiao in May 2009.

The Manchester-based former light-welterweight and welterweight champion formally retired last year with a record of 45 wins and two defeats and now runs his own promotions company.

In 2010, Hatton was stripped of his licence to box by the BBBoC after allegations of cocaine usage.

"He looks very well, everything seems to be in order and he's sorted himself out," Smith said.

"From what he was saying, he seems very settled with his family. He has already had some of the medicals and we are making sure he's on track."

Hatton dominated the light-welterweight division and his most notable win at that weight came against IBF champion Kostya Tszyu in 2005.

The following year, Hatton defeated Puerto Rican Luis Collazo to take the WBA world welterweight title, following that victory by beating Juan Urango to reclaim his IBF light-welterweight title.

He lost to American five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather in 2007 and suffered a comprehensive beating by Pacquiao in his final fight three years ago.

Hatton, who frequently ballooned in weight between bouts, has lost three stone this year and is tipped to return to action with a fight in November.

He stopped Paulie Malignaggi in 11 rounds in his penultimate fight in 2008, since when the American has become the WBA welterweight champion.

Former world champion Barry McGuigan has told the BBC that Hatton can win a world title again.

"There's every chance we'll see 90% of the Ricky Hatton we saw a few years back and that will be good enough to beat someone like Paulie Malignaggi," McGuigan said.

I think he won't be that cool at WW at any kind of level, but hope i'm wrong.

I was reading through "Related" articles on the bbc website today though and all that **** about his wanting to cut his wrists with a stanley knife and that, it just made me so sad for him.

Hatton-Brook superfight next summer anyone? Make up for never fighting Witter. Not really interested in Khan-Hatton at the moment, unless Ricky goes back to LWW anyway.

Kell Brook isn't exactly superfight material and Hatton will be retired again by next summer.

This is a terrible idea. He isn't beating Malignaggi or any world level fighter now, he needs to stay away from Khan and Brook because he wouldn't be able to get out the way of anything from those two.

Hatton is fine at 147 IMO, it's just an excuse for a poor performance against Collazo and the defeat to Floyd, a fight for which he was in great shape, the best he was ever in.

Of course he'd never trouble a DLH, a Trinidad or a Mosley, but he doesn't go from beige a top light welter to being a complete turd at 147.

His regression isn't much different from Mosley at 154. Not the same, but not a turd who'd lose to anyone of note.

He'd beat Malignaggi again I'm sure, and probably Khan too.

Just stay away from Floyd, Manny and Marquez, and he'll fare just fine.

And probably Matthysse too, come to think of it.

I'd give you a serious reply if that was in English, but all I could read out of it was "I dropped out before I got to GCSE's"

Hatton shouldn't fight any southpaws ever again.

Pac executed him, Collazo nearly beat him, he looked **** and should have been disqualified against Urango.... aside from half a dozen rounds against Magee, I can't remember him looking anything other than lost, and frankly shite against southpaws.

    Oscar.

I'm a bit worried that he will lose and slip back into depression to be honest. He seems happy again and it'd be a shame to **** that up. That said it'll be a huge night and all the casuals will love this.
