Ricky Hatton does not have the required reflexes to flourish under Mayweather Sr.

If you watched last night, you've probably seen it as well. In all aspects, Mayweather is the perfect trainer for Ricky, because there is no one who can learn more from a defensive specialist like him.

But while Hatton has speed of foot, speed of hand, decent power and great stamina and fast pace, he doesn't have the reflexes to prolong his stay on the outside and box his way in. Mayweather would have him slip and slide and be slick while he realistically can't be any of those things -- his reflexes simply aren't good enough. It's a physical thing.

Hatton would actually be helped more adopting and perfecting a bobbing-and-weaving style a-la Frazier or Tyson, to just be moving his head constantly, then coming in with power. As he is now he's in danger against any puncher.

Torres is such a dangerous fight for him, and if he sticks at 140 he'll meet him eventually.

If I were Hatton, I'd try to land Pac, if that doesn't work out, just take the DLH fight and get clobbered for a big payday.

It's a shame, since by getting Mayweather he's showing he wants to last in this game and build a legacy. I'd really wish I could see him and Mayweather working out, but I can't.

It was the same with Oscar -- he never had the reflexes required for Mayweather's approach either -- DLH naturally just relied on a lot of focus (that drained him in all his fights) and a good guard/chin to protect him.

Ricky can't fight tall with a high guard, can't parry or slip because of his reflexes, so bob and weave only way to go imo.

Hatton has been boxing for over a decade. The traits he has are ingrained in his system. It is difficult to overcome that in 7 weeks of training. Mayweather Sr. even said so, and he stated that it is going to take some time to fine-tune Hatton.

Hatton has the speed and the reflexes, and now he has a better trainer. I think he is on a good path and hopefully we will see more good things to come about from this.

I saw some improvement in his fight with Paulie, I still saw some of the same flaws. Give it some time and I think he will come around.

Also, you look at his record, he has done a damn good job in the ring. One loss to PBF doesn't tarnish what he has accomplished.

I saw improvement as well. He did pot-shot at times and he countered some, while getting hit, he hit back harder.

What he consistently did not do was slip. He could time a jab occasionally, but that's it. I hope I'm wrong, Malignaggi does have good handspeed so it may have been too much, but it really seemed like his reflexes aren't enough to consistently rely on slipping punches.

There's absolutely no need for this comment. I did not criticise or judge him unfairly.

I like Rocky Hatton. He's done very well. Any fighter out there has physical limitations beyond what they can train, however.

He was slipping some of paulie's shots and was harder to hit than usual. He showed more head movement that he did before. He slipped paulie's jab while coming forward on the way in.

He isnt going to change overnight and Hatton is never going to become pernell whitaker, but it was a good improvement over blocking punches with his face like he normally does.

Mayweather Sr. isnt out to change is entire style, he is just implementing a few tweaks and trying to get hatton to improve his defense, and honestly he seems to be doing a good job thus far.

Great post. As was already said, it will take time to adjust to this new style, but he is getting there. I always thought that Hatton was deceptively fast.
