Who is Ricky Hatton? The short answer would be that guy from the UK that got koed by Mayweather and Manny.

But getting koed twice is hardly the sum of this fighters accomplishment during his career, so what else did he do while he was active?

Lets start at the beginning, Hatton first emerged on the scene as a fighter from the UK that really fought or got into give and take matches in other words. Soon after emerging as a UK prospect Hatton defeated some decent fighters as would be expected.

In 2005 Hatton was able to get a fight VS Kostya Tzyu. Hatton was Tzuy's mandatory challenger but considering what Hatton had accomplished up until that point it is very hard to claim that Hatton deserved his ranking. Most believed that Hatton would simply get slaughtered and they would have been right if not for Hattons undieing desire to win. Such a firm desire that he didn't care less if he was breaking the rules and hitting his opponent on the back of the head as if it was a legal area to land a blow. I don't ever recall not before and not after this fight seeing a fighter hit as many times on the back of the head as I did that night. I wonder what the referees problem was, did he not know that punches to the back of the head are not allowed?

A competent unbiased referee would have warned Hatton firmly regarding those blows to the back of the head and that would probably have been the end of them. Sadly for boxing fans and Kostya Tzyu this referee didn't give firm warnings and didn't disqualify Hatton for his dirty tactics. This was Kostya's last professional bout as he suffered bleeding from his brain that made ending his career an obvious decision.

So Hurray Ricky Hatton became the undisputed junior welterweight world champion. Given the way in which he won that title I think that buying any belt at walmart is a bigger accomplishment.

Hattons biggest win after the Tzyu fight was against Jose Luis Castillo at junior welterweight, Castillo's biggest accomplishments had been in the junior lightweight and in the lightweight division. At the time of the match Castillo was 34 years old had 7 losses 1 draw and 55 wins on his record.

There is no greatness in cheating your way to victory and winning against a 34 year old that has had 63 fights and lost 7 of them that's certainly not the stuff that legends are made from.

Carlos Maussa.... he'll surely make it into the HOF...

Selling PPV fights does not make one a great fighter.

You can't rate a fighter based on Ko losses, you have to rate him on his wins. As I explained earlier the win VS Tzyu was hardly a win at all so Hattons best win was therefor VS Castillo who already had 7 losses on his record.

Glass Jawed. His Chin was his undoing when he didn't have British referees to help save him

Ah yes because as we all know a referees nationality can severely affect your punch resistance, if only it had been a British referee that night against floyd. Although personally I feel that the colour of the turnbuckles had a far more damaging effect on hattons chin, if only they had been purple that night...Ricky walks through bombs when the turnbuckles are purple.

Hatton was a very good fighter and has an excellent chance to enter the HOF. There's probably less deserving fighters who have already been inducted, so him getting in wouldn't surprise me in the least bit.

His most notable victories were against a past his prime Kosta and a WAY past his prime Castillo. The JLC fight almost looked like a fixed match, the way Castillo went down from that body shot didn't look natural at all. And well the Kosta fight was a bit surprising in the sense that Ricky was allowed to rough him up and fight his style of fight without the ref intervening too much.

And he did put on a pretty good performance against FLoyd for the first 6 rounds of their fight, albeit Mayweather was coming off one of his long 1 year + layoffs. But he was never the same after the FLoyd fight, Mayweather took his confidence away and Manny slammed the door on his career.

That comeback fight of his was really sad to watch.

Watching Ricky steam-roll Kostya Tszyu -- one of the greatest to put on gloves -- should settle, once and for all -- Ricky was not overrated.
