I sometimes see Ricky Hatton, geting alot of hate on here, i think people have a very short memory and only focus on his defeats, but the fact is that Ricky was and still is arguably the most loved British fighter of all tme. He gave us some great nights, a Hatton fight was like a World Cup match, and to take so many fans over to vegas like he did....i doubt that will ever be matched. Britsh boxing is missing Ricky, we have Froch, Khan and Haye, plus the countless other prospects coming through. But not one of them have the backing of Hatton, The fight night buzz that Hatton created. Ricky Hatton Respect....The peoples champion!
I said argubly, and i dont think bruno was more loved than Hatton, i doubt he would have took that amount of people over to vegas to fight Tyson, and hes a HEAVEYWEIGHT
No the fact is that a lot of people seem to wank ricky off for getting murdered by the 2 pound for pounds at the time. Why? Pac and floyd destroyed a lot of other fighters aswel? The fact is david diaz did better than ricky hatton vs pac. Other than that who did he beat? an ancient tsyzu who was merely passin the torch on. and a shot to **** castillo. Wow.
Pretty ruthless appraisal from oli, its not too far off though. I hate how he's so widely praised for his bravery in taking on those fights then losing for 20 million or whatever the ****. That's not a big ask. Arguably he built his whole career around avoiding risks and building his status for those opportunities. As for how popular he is, I think he has a certain cross section of fans that are possibly not even interested in boxing anymore. That wouldn't surprise me. He's not exactly loved on here, its 50/50.
Frank Bruno is considered a national treasure who has appeared on 100s of tv shows and was known by everyone in the country. Ricky Hatton first came to the attention of the country when he fought Mayweather, then when he fought Pacquauio and then when he had became a junkie. His "crossover" apparances are few and far between. If Frank Bruno had been fighting Mike Tyson when Hatton fought Mayweather then it would have been inconcievable that Frank wouldn't of had more fans there than Ricky did. In 1988, the year Tyson first fought Bruno, few people could afford to travel across the alantic for a holiday, nevermind a short stay to watch boxing.
It's a scientific fact that a boxers' weight is directly proportional to said boxers' volume of fans. Hence, the gigantic worldwide following of Nikolay Valuev as opposed to the measly following and relative anonymity of Luis Concepcion. :good
Erm, you're the one who's named himself after a punch that sent poor Wicky head first into the ring post.
Ah yes, remember the his homecoming, against Juan Lazcano, the fight at the City of Manchester in front of 55,000 people (?).....a thank you to all his fans who spent their hard earned money to stay up and support him against Mayweather. "This one's for all my fans"......"all you need to do is fork out another £14.95 to watch me fail to put on a performance against non-ranked contender who hasn't won in two years....but this is my thank you gift to all of you!" People's champ, what a load of bollocks.
What the f uck is he going to do, fight for free. Get Real mate! [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1C9rHfh2oE&feature=related[/ame] peoples champ!
