Ricky Hatton: The WBU Years

Witter is a guy that is good for boxing, takes hard fights...scores big knock outs, goes the traditional route, and doens't make excuses when he loses.
Wicky...meh.....for those who still weren't convinced, his true colours came out well and truly as soon as things were not all going his way and he got sparked by PBF. He has been maing an even bigger **** of himself ever since that fight talking about it.

How many p4p top ten fighters (at the time he faced them) has he fought?

How many p4p best fighters in the world (including one he had to move up to fight) has he taken on?

True that. He was gifted an opportunity which he had done nothing to deserve on home soil against a fighter who was not the best champ in the division and he blew it by simply running away all fight. Witter was then the mandatory challenger for DeMarcus Corley when he was WBO champ and never took his shot. He then beat about 15 straight cadavers whilst fighting nobody worth mentioning, got a couple of close point wins when he fought real opponents and was gifted another title shot on home soil against the shell of Corley who had lost 3 of his last 5 and got stopped by a no-name in his next fight.

I think it's pretty clear who was the one who never had to work for his opportunities and who has spent most of his career avoiding a challenge. That is why he slates Hatton's decision to come back against a top 10 contender after losing to Mayweather, only to make his own comeback post-defeat against a guy not in the world top 50! Witter will never take a chance voluntarily, his whole career has been focused around taking on tin cans whilst hoping that he'll be able to talk himself into a retirement payday against Hatton. Oh well, he can carry on dreaming...

 

i think most of the haters would have witter beating hatton no prob,thats how blinded most of you are.
ive watched hatton from the am's(also as a am)and thought he was something a bit special,its not often a english man dominates a weight devision,but im sure you all think he hasent,and ducked everyone out there including witter:rofl

 

Yeah Castillo was one of the BEST fighters in the world! Yeah he went up 3lbs for a career pay day and got his ass handed to him and then blamed the ref. Now he`s facing Pac-Man in another pay day.Your right its completely ridiculous.

 

So basically, the whole "problem" with Hatton is that he has the cheek to get well paid for what he does. That is what tends to happen when a fighter takes on the biggest challenges out there, the top p4p fighters. If he was happy sitting in his comfort zone and moaning that everyone was avoiding him like Junior Witter does, Hatton would be earning 100k a fight as well (OK maybe a bit more as he actually brings more than a car load of fans to the table).

it's more about his trying to insult our intelligence with all this pish about beat Pac then he's no1 p4p and how he's won x world titles etc. He's ben taking the **** out of his fans for years and they're too thick too see through him. A fraud in the true sense of the word.

 

He defended THE title (The Ring) against Mausa, Urango, Castillo, Lazcano and Malignaggi.

Im not saying that to defend Hatton.

Ricky Hatton became THE man at 140 and has been there for nearly 4 years and through 5 defences. How he got there was terrible. He won and defended the WBU title against mostly nobodies until, eventully, even he had to admit that he was embarassed at the level of opposition (after the Pederson fight) so, because it was said in public Warren had to move him towards a major fight. Hatton, however, wouldn't be the rich man he is now if it hadn't been for Frank Warren, the MEN and the WBU. He should be grateful.

He caught Tzysu at the right time and people forget that most people had Tzysu in a small lead going into the 8th. Tzysu tired badly and Hatton was young and hungry.

He hasn't really ducked anyone except for Witter since he beat Tzysu. Mayweather and Cotto weren't around 140 for much longer after Hatton became THE man and the division had been quite weak until the arrival of Paulie Malignaggi came along and, in my opinion, froze against Hatton.

Hatton may seriously believe that he is 7 times World Champion just as much as he appears to actually believe that the P4P title is lineal. But he is deluding himself. However anyone who thinks Hatton will end up being regarded as a ATG if he loses against Pac Man is deluded aswell. Even if he wins against Manny, Hatton needs to move up to 147 and defeat Cotto, Williams and another of the better fighters up there before he can be regarded as ATG. Will that happen? No way.

 

So considering that the guy is a natural and career 140lber which challenges were there out there which would have been bigger than the ones he has taken on in Tzyu, Mayweather and Pacquiao?

 

Well, in his own mind he probably has a legitimate claim if he beats Pac, considering that he is the #1 and has already shown he has no problems with the weight. I myself think that's a stretch, but a convincing win in this one would put him top 5 for me.

As for the X world titles, technically he has, though most of us see them for what they're worth, which is not very much. The only one which matters to me is the Lineal/Ring title, which Hatton has held for years. Going by that logic, we should all be angry with Witter and Gavin Rees as well for trying to convince the fans that they were genuine world champs.

 

I did, however, nearly wet myself on reading this one. Firstly, Witter has never taken on a fight as hard as Mayweather, Pacquiao, Tszyu or Castillo. The hardest fights he has taken were probably Ndou, Kotelnik, Corley and Harris, and only one of those was by choice in Ndou (Kotelnik was Euro mandatory, Corley he had to fight for his title shot and Harris was WBC mandatory as well). Other than this, he has been happy facing the 14 straight cadavers he faced in the 5 years between the Judah and Ndou fights. Coincidentally, when he did at last step up to half-decent opposition, the "exciting knockouts" suddenly ceased.

Whilst so many (him included) were quick to criticise Hatton for coming back against Lazcano, who was a top 10 fighter at least, I notice there was silence when Witter came back against the #6 fighter in Argentina!!!

As for traditional route, well, that's meh as far as I'm concerned, neither here nor there. A cynic would say he was happy to take that route as it allowed him to be moved towards a world title shot without ever facing anyone who was any threat.

I don't dislike Witter and quite like to see him do well, however, the double standards which some people show with regards to him and Hatton are quite staggering. Hatton, despite facing 4 p4p guys and a number of top contenders gets slated at every opportunity whilst Witter, who has fought about four world class fighters his entire career gets excuse after excuse made for him. What's good for the goose and all that...

 

Well that's a pretty fair appraisal. People have to bear in mind that the WBU belt was simply a cheap title label for Warren to stick on his main event. It's not as though Hatton got to world level and was happy with that belt, he was barely above British title level when he first won it. I'm sure Warren would have been happy if he was still defending the WBU at the MEN Arena against the likes of Stephen Smith now, but Hatton gave him the ultimatum and got the genuine title shot, the p4p ranking, the big fights in America etc... He doesn't get enough credit for this.

Warren is a bigger hindrance than a help, I'm sure he has helped Hatton make money, but he also held back his career. Joe Calzaghe was saying a few weeks ago that before the Lacy fight Warren discussed getting 7 more weak fighters to get him to 50-0 and retiring a manufactured legend. Calzaghe, too, informed him he wanted the big fights (a few years late maybe but better than never) and look what happened.

Nobody is calling him an all time great or anything close to it, just a good world class fighter who when all is said and done has made himself a decent career to be proud of. And if anybody really thinks the guy who stepped in with Pac, Money, Tszyu and the rest was afraid of somebody like Witter then it I think it tells us that it wasn't Hatton's fans who were being fooled by a bit of PR spin!
