According to the Manchester Evening News, former two-division champion Ricky Hatton is possibly going to obtain a trainer's licence as early as next month. Hatton officially announced his retirement from boxing in July, and runs a thriving promotional company [Hatton Promotions], but wants to help his fighters in the corner as well.

“I’d like to be a trainer. I’ve got Hatton Promotions and a great staff working for me. Where we’ve come from as a promotional company is a credit to me and the people who work for me. I want to bring fighters through and champions through," Hatton said.

Nothing wrong with being hands on and involved BUT he can ONLY do that if he has a top quality team behind him. Its clear as day that behind top promotions/organisations like UFC, GBP and Top Rank there are top quality teams who take care of the match making, promotion etc Dana, DLH, Arum etc are the faces who have the final say but I think its the team who take care of production, organisation etc that make all the difference.

Should the guy really be allowed, having brought the sport into disrespute?

What he did was no worse than Calzaghes dancing for bringing the sport in disrepute.

He probably wants the trainers licence to become "hands on", I can't see he doing that much day to day on the promotional side esp. as he was in the middle of his coke binge when the company was finding its feet.

Hes the face and the name of Hatton Promotions, maybe training is a realistic way for him to really contribute day to day?

More that I am not a world class boxing trainer by now! With advice like this I should really be the leading shout to send Jeff Thomas to Prizefighter glory and beyond.

Oscar doesn’t do much in GBP. Mostly shareholder meetings, investor rallies, signing fighters, etc. Schaefer is the head of the company and makes all the big decisions. Oscar has a vote, but he hired Schaefer to do all that stuff since, well he’s just a fighter.

Hatton will be similar. He’s hired some good people already and he’ll be a massive boon to a lot of young fighters. I think he’ll make a good corner man too.

Yeah, no way does Hatton run Hatton Promotions any more than Oscar runs GBP.

You can't beat that piece of advice.

I suppose it's better than what I do when watching fights, in that I explain to Mrs Steve what the fighter should be doing, and then proceed to stand up and give her a shadowboxing example.

"Look love, it's simple - he's pulling straight back and leaving his chin right up in the air...what he should be doing...."
